  • Shifting hard

    Hi all.

Tore down the bike last fall to clean it up and put on new chain and sprockets. There was grease, grime and road dirt all over especially the bottom near the chain (makes sense). I cleaned inside the clutch plate real well and greased that rod that goes inside. Finally have it going again and it's shifting a bit hard. In fact, it's inconsistent. Sometimes hard sometimes it's ok. It always goes into gear so it not shifting at all is not a problem (thank goodness). It needs to be easier because I'm really having a hard time finding nutural when I have to sit at a red light. It's a 2000 GSX750F.

Any ideas, let me know. Thanks in advance!

+1 or possibly even change your oil

did you remove the whole little mechanism that attaches to the clutch cable? The little thing that hooks onto the nub at the end of the clutch cable inside the box

Oil was changed so it's new and levels are fine. Chain tension is to spec and I will have to research on how to do a clutch adjustment. Not quite following the last post but when I took the clutch plate off I left the cable attached at the top (tie wrapped it to the chassis to keep it out of the way while cleaning). The only thing that was removed was that little rod that comes out of the side (not sure what it is). I cleaned it, lubed it before putting it back in.

I just had the same problem on my 95' 600, it happened after I took that little mechanism off and some of the ball bearings fell out, I had to clean and re-lube them... I wasn't sure what kind of lube to use, I just put some gear lube inside it to be sure the little balls weren't flying anywhere! It took a few days for it to equalize out and now I can find neutral normally again.

When I removed the clutch plate the shifting rod was the only thing that came off ... no ball bearings or anything like that. I lubed the shifting rod and placed it back in the hole when I put the plate back on. That's really it. I don't see anything else that needs attention. I may have to go back to the idea of adjusting the clutch.

That clunk is normal. Every bike ive owned did that, Kaw, Honda, yam and suzukis.

Pretty sure every bike I've rode, they clunk goin into 1st. Higher the rpm louder the clunk. As long as shifting up and down all gears is good prob nothing to worry about.
