  • My new Cage...it's bluetiful!

I flew down to Nashville recently to pick up my new DD cage...had it for a few months now but just late to post. I figure I'll wh0re a little.

    2005 GLI Lagoon Blue 6 speed 1.8T

For those of you that don't know VWs well, the GLI is a special edition Jetta sport trim that has been around through most of the generations. I happen to have a 1992 GLI (last year of the 2nd gen. Jetta) you see under the cover, and the newer one is 2005 (last year of the 4th gen).
Some of the differences between this and other trims are basically sport brakes, suspension, interior trim/Recaro seats, exterior body styling, 18" BBS RC wheels, 6 speed manual tranny, headlights/taillights, etc.--lots of goodies from the factory.
My wife's car is a GLS for comparison, shown in these family portraits...
As you can see we love our Dubs and Kat

Only mods so far is a boost guage, CAI, APR 93 octane flash, and Forge splitter valve...next probably bigger turbo and FMIC, TIP, and DP maybe...not in a hurry though

Here are some pics, hope you enjoy

And the Kat just bored awaiting warmth...

        lol....

I have been on Vortex going on 8 years....one thing I have learned, is that while our Dubs indeed look uber hawt whilst sitting only millimeters above the ground....they perform better and don't puncture oil pans and break tie rod ends and other components while being driven daily let alone being driven hard. This is not a show car, which in my opinion is where the bags/slammed cars belong. If it was believe me it would be on the ground.

I am one of the few people who actually believe form<function. I actually DRIVE my car, and when I say drive, I mean drive-high speed, twisties, etc. as safe as possible of course on country runs with little or no population and all conditions taken into consideration...
Not to mention some of the roads here in Missouri are unforgiving during daily driving so it's simply not practical.

My motorcycle tires have 0 chicken strip, and my cars get driven the same. It's just preference.

I had a VR6 glx jetta, had to sell it because the repair bills were outrageous and I got out of the scene cars.

Nice though, love the gli package.

It's just not in the same class as a Kharman-Ghia or even a Bug. Pity...

Other than that, very nice. Take them out around Branson much? Nice (well, not really nice but definitely twisty and fun) roads there.

I know what you mean....I love our VWs, but they definitely have their issues like other cars...the cost of parts/labor is bad if you don't do majority yourself or have a friend who is a German car specialist, which I happen to be lucky enough to have.

I just sold my mk3 VR 96 GTI dd to get this one...If I have to pick the most issue prone VWs we have had, it is the VR or the 16v....I have had 2 mk4 2.0's, a VR mk3, a 16V motronic mk2, a 1.8 mk2, and now the 1.8T... Although the 2.0's are slower, they are the best for reliability and little issues, hands down. VR and 16v aren't bad, and I still would own them-but be prepared for some issues....nothing major in my case thankfully, but definitely some of the regular issues us VW people are familiar with

But the fun factor of the 1.8T and VR is just awesome...and really, with proper maintenance and as long as it wasn't a raped car from PO, the overall reliability is great on most of them.

Oh yes, I will have an air-cooled someday....not in a hurry, but LOVE them too....coincidentally I have some pics of an excellent looking lime green painted 68bug in Branson for sale while I was down there most recently....thought about calling the guy on it before I got closer and looked at the interior.
Although a restore project on one would be fun
And yes very excellent routes down there for driving-my father lives an hour or so from Branson in Ava, MO. The drive from Branson to there or vice versa is one of the best IMHO, HWY 76....beautiful country.

Try from the air is even better, flying over the ozarks is beatiful...not many emergency places to bail if you had to but pretty nonetheless!

duuude yoouuuuu suuuuuck! super clean ride! I've been trying to get my hands on a clean mkiv for some time now, all i can find is slushboxes around here...i'm on vortex as well...just don't put wide wheels on it with stretched tires, still not a fan of that look...i'd love to find even a 2.slo 5spd around here, can't even find those let alone 1.8t's!

air-cooleds....ahhh, the beginning of my VW obsession....we (dad, brother, and I) have a 59 ghia project lingering in the corner of the shop, along with brother's 68 swingaxle vert and his 60 ragtop on the 69 pan....all needing to get done....someday...

I know exactly what you mean....I have/had several parts in boxes laying around the garage still awaiting install or completion.....your project sounds yummy though

Oh and I know the feeling of not being able to find them either....I am very picky on motor/mileage/condition/edition, etc. so I have to search to find mine....traveled to Lawrence Kansas for the 16V, Indianapolis for the VR, and Nashville for the 1.8T. Spent a good year looking for the VR before I found the perfect one, and about same for the 16v. Took a month or two to find the mk4-they are newer so more available seemingly, although in excellent shape maybe not.
Sounds like a road trip is in order! If it's out this way I'll ride along

edit: btw Thanks for the props, and you will definitely not see me with stretched tires/wide wheels/bags/etc. I keeps it simple, GLI doesn't need much to be awesome

I put an engine in one of those. Makes me never ever ever want to buy a turbo VW.

                            I used to have a 2001 Wolfsburg (1.8T).

Damn I glad to rid of that peice of crap. It was slow, especially with more than just me in it. And forget about a car load of people during the summer with the A/C on. It barely wanted to accellerate.

The engine on it died last spring (one of the valves fell into the engine, broke pistons, other valves and cracked the head). Didn't really want to get rid of it "yet" due to car payments, but I'm sure glad it's gone. And after other experiences of people I know with VWs, I won't ever own one again.
