You get what you pay for! I've used the GD cables and hard drive enclosures for years, with good results and top quality. So I gave this charger a shot. I'm glad I did! Very nice quality, and a good price for what you get.
Save up for great gear and dress for the fall before you ride. If you can't afford good quality gear, don't ride. It's like saying you can't afford seat belts for your car. There are just no laws to make gear mandatory.
I also had used the harbor freight one on the battery i just bought last season and it killed it over the winter. Battery is totally dead....
1993 Kat 600 - (Parts bike)
1994 Kat 600 - Jardine full exhaust, Factory Pro Jet Kit, Pirelli Diablo Stradas, Fender CHOPPED, repainted plastics and tank
Just FYI:This charger is NOT suitable for the Kat battery, or for most motorcycle batteries. Even if it does look wiz-bang with lots of lights and switches and pretty case design.
Why?
Because the Granite Digital puts out 4.0 Amps, and the max safe charge rate on most motorcycle batteries is under 1.5 Amps (at 14.2 Volts nominal) to keep the many plates packed tight in the small battery case from overheating (boiling off).
Some simple basics: 98+ Kats (600 & 750) - with the stock YTX-9BS battery, max sustained charge rate should be 800 milliamps (0.8 amps). 88-97 Kat 600 - with the stock YB10L-B2 battery, max sustained charge rate should be 1 amp. 89 - 97 Kat 750 - with the stock YB14L-B2 battery (or swapping to the YTX14AHL-BS Maint-free upgrade), max sustained charge rate should be 1.2 amps.
For a float/trickle-charger that is regularly used, a small (500 to 800 milliamp) charger is more than sufficient. Personally, because of the environment here in Florida (hot, humid, often literally wet), I use the Deltran BatteryTender Waterproof 800... and yes, it is literally water-proof -- I dropped it in a bucket of water for an hour when I first bought it (while it was charging up the Kat) just to test it.
I got the CTEK Multi XS 3600. Absolutely fantastic. Took my stuffed 4wd battery and saved it. Comes with a great plug that you can hard wire to you bike. Can use it as a jump starter. Awesome.
