  • Valve clearance advice:

Finally mearsured the valves and here is what I got after the first time.

The bike went 4 years without an adustment (at least 6,000 miles.)
Bike kas 19,000 on it now.
would folks say that some of these are just outside normail range? ie, too loose. Should I just tighten up a few?
The bike is a 97 Kat 600, bucket at shim.
L and R indicate left and right valves in eack set.
Hope my diagram makes sense. (Sorry, having trouble getting text to line up.) Best I can do
    Thanks,
    Newride

I have not done a whole lot of valve adjusts, but I'd say they look pretty good for the miles. Kinda makes you wonder if we need to do them at 600 miles. Better safe than sorry though.

Guess I just don't want to have to open the top of the motor again in a year to do the looser valves I skipped this time.
"to shim or not to shim." That is the question.
I just want to get the thing on the road...............

        Look good

It would be hard to get them much better. You need to worry more about "tight" valves then you do about "loose". A tight valve will burn whereas a loose valve will only be noisy.

          Update:

I re-measured my valves to so I could drink more beer in the sun.........ah
Anyway, the clearances are slightly different than the first measure I did. I wanted to be sure so I double checked. I am still good or do I need to adjust any?

The second right exhaust is a little out and the third left intake is close.
Feel free to make fun of me if I am being anal.

I would say you are fine except for #2 exhuast, right and #3 intake, left. if you have it opened up, go ahead and just bring them to spec. Even those prolly are not a big deal.

When I do mine, I adjust everything to .002 over the lowest spec... ie, the spec for your intake is .004 on the low side, so shim up till you get to .006. I know the shims are a bigger PITA over the adjustable ones but I would do it anyway.

                Yeah,
that is what I was thinking.
Now I got to figure out............what the hell is a shim? Never seen one and that shim table in my manual makes my head spin. I know you can get them at the dealers....but, Math and numbers is not my strong suit. I have a Excell chart about shim conversion, but have no idea on how to read it. Can anyone explain it in moron terms for me?
                Thanks for the advice Katlover13.
                Peace,
