    UPDATE!!

I can't believe i've gotten this far, i couldn't do it without the great write up (carb 102)

Im going to post some random pics of the progress and anyone feel free to chime and say "hey do this" or "that doesn't look right"

    does this look stock?

I don't notice any egg shape as mentioned in the service manual?

Is this dirty or is it supposed to look like this? also there were balls of brown stuff in there?

Stock jets? or hard to tell?

    Thanks guys!

Those are some dirty carbs I hope you plan on taking them off the rails and dipping them.
Once you do that and sync them up providing there are no other problems I bet that bike will
      run like a dream

There are numbers, albeit small numbers, engraved into the jets. I don't remember stock sizes off the top of my head, but I am sure someone will chime in here with them. If not, they are all over this forum. A search may be in order.

i must admit, they smelled absolutely like nothing I've ever smelled before. The gas that came out of the bowls was definitely varnished, and whatever is in the carbs - i can't even describe. I have no idea how it started up and ran back in december albeit on prime with the throttle open a smidge.

im still trying to slosh out the little bit of gas left in that damn tank!

anyway, dipping the carbs... how involved of a process is that? im guessing I need a bucket and a lot of carb cleaner or "chem dip"? also, it sounds like I will have to take apart all carbs at once rather than one at a time like i was originally going to do? that makes me slightly more nervous.

          Thanks dj!

I will look for those numbers and search for the jetting today

          Thanks sono!

also, should i used cans of air to help clean the carbs? or can i use my big air compressor?

Im concerned about two things, the canned air has "bitterent" in it to stop people from huffing it, will that leave residue? also my compressor is oiled type, good or bad?

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/B-9-PARTS-CLEANER-BASKET-GALLON/dp/B0002KKIIC"]Here[/ame] is the chem dip. I know the link is to Amazon, but I found it at Pepboys, Autozone, Advance Auto, Wal-Mart (cheapest), and Taylors Do-it center.

Carbs 102 explains how to take the carbs off of the rail (hence my suggestion of 4 tupperware containers to hold parts). I dipped one carb body and all the needles and bits that could be dipped at the same time. Left them in there over night.

As for air, it's your choice. I used my air compressor Make sure you can see daylight through the jets when you're done and they are dry. I'm sure others will suggest more tips/tricks.

I am having trouble sourcing the chem-dip here at the local parts stores, damn Canada!

I have found the Ivan's jet kit, which i have book marked, still searching for those stock katana jet's to make sure it hasn't already been done in my carbs.

would running a yosh slip on pipe on stock jets have caused any damage to the engine? i've read it can cause some valve issues? I figure if it hasn't been done, i may as well change them (jets) while im in there.

                EDIT:

sorry for my lack of looking, i just checked the service manual and it's all right there in the carb specs:

                Pilot 12.5
                Jet Needle 5DH30-54
                Needle Jet P-0
                Main Jet (carb 1 & 4 = 115) (carb 2 & 3 = 112.5)

^are those the numbers that should be etched on the jets?

Canadian spec bikes I think have adjustable stock needles, which US bikes do not.

Those jet sizes seem correct, however a list of the jet sizes is in the wiki.

I use my compressor not cans (why buy it in cans when I have a machine that does that) I just turn the regulator down so my blow off gun isnt pushing 100psi out of it, I run it around 40-50psi when doing this or my pc (oil free compressor).
I dont think the oil in your compressor is going to hurt the carbs as it is a very small amount that come out of the tool.
Yes those numbers should be stamped on the jets.
If you cant find the chem dip I have used seafoam on small engine carbs as a dip I just had to use a whole can of it to soak the carbs and it worked just fine I just dont think I left them in there overnight might start with an hour or two

                      both of you, thank you!

a Katana is a lot like a Jeep I've come to find. there is a ton of support for it, and the forums are invaluable!

Just went through the wiki to confirm needle sizes, thanks dj for confirming the stamp.

You're welcome thats what the forum is for.
I noticed the same thing about Kats (owned many xj) they need to be tinkered with but the community is great.

well i took a look at the jets from carb #1 and the only number i could see was 118 and that doesn't correspond to any of the stock number unless its different for canada... can anyone confirm? maybe this does have a jet kit, i really hope so!!! it would save me a decent chunk of change.

Are you sure that 8 isn't a 5? CHeck the other three carbs as well, because I think # 2 and 3 should be smaller, even on Canadian bikes.

A 5 would make sense than the inside one or two could be 112.5
