  • speedo suspisions confirmed

I've been thinking my speedo was wrong and today I confirmed it with a GPS. At low speed it is pretty close, at 100 km/h the bike is actually going about 8 km slower at about 92 km/h.

Is this a streched speedo cable or is there more to it. I've read about a speed sensor but I'm not clear what role it plays.

I have no idea if the bike has the original sprocket ratio, seems like the speedo reads of the front wheel if I read the manual right.

I haven't decided how much this bothers me, it might be in direct relation to how hard it is to fix. If it is an easy one I'll add it to my to do list.

They are all like that, at least the ones with the cables... I did the same on mine last weekend to similar results...

Even the electronic speedos on most bikes are off anywhere from 8% to 20+% Changing your gearing or tire size aggravates the issue. That's why there are things like Speedohealers that correct your speedo. I have one on my busa. It was off by 8.3%. Now it's correct and I've verified it with GPS. Another thing to consider is that the error in your speedo also affects the miles that build up on your odometer as well as your mpg calculations.

I remember that in the 90s the Federal Gov allowed +/- 7% on the vehicular speedometer as an acceptable variance...
