I realize the motor vents into the airbox, most motorcycles do If you look at the pic of the air filter you can see a drip of oil coming off the over saturated foam, which I am guessing was the low point. If someone over oiled the filter (and I've seen people use engine oil) it would drip off into the air box. I've seen it many times in dirtbikes but you use a sticky air filter oil so it's easy to tell that's what it is.

That was my thought process. Either way I would guess the advice would still be to change to stock filter and check it again after riding. It sucks that it's such a pain to get to the air filter and check.

It was dripping off the low point, you are correct there.

But that could very well be due to the filter sitting in the puddle of oil.

Anyway, remove the oil fill cap. Does your oil smell like gas?

I will check tonight and report back. if it does smell like gas what does that mean? I had the petcock turned to run while it was stored.

If it smells like gas, that means your float needles are most likely bad and that gas has mixed with your oil. It would also explain the oil in your airbox, as the oil would be thinner with gas mixed in.

Just got back from picking up my tune up items do these prices sound right to you?
              $16 per plug
$48 for oem style paper filter
              $14 oil filter
              $6 per quart of oil

The plugs and filter seem stupid expensive! This again compared to the jeep parts I'm used to buying

The plugs and both filters are twice as much or more than I get them for but there's no VAT here.

For Canadian prices, yes pretty close to right, that's why I buy from the US for hard parts.

well i dug into it tonight... i cleaned the oil (honey) out of the air box, there actually wasn't as much as it looked to be. I was able to clean it up with one shop towel and some brake cleaner.

I have a picture of what the oil looked like see below.. it had no noticeable scent

when i removed the air box i noticed the drain tube was completely full with the same thick honey type of oil.

so i traced the tube down to near the brake peg and pulled the cap off and let it drain, I got it good and clear with some compressed air.

I will keep an eye on this as i drive it this summer to see if it accumulates quickly. my guess is that it hasn't been drained in many years.

I thought i'd post a pic of the carbs just to see if any of you guys quickly saw anything a miss with them off the bat

I am having a real ***** of a time trying to get the oil filter off, looks like ill have to buy some kind of cap with a ratchet end on it.

also i moved the tank and heard a little bit of gas slosh around, i tried everything to get that gas out!!!!!! it just will not drain. maybe ill try again tomorrow.

I was going to tackle removing the carbs tonight as well but got scared, i am going to study the carbs 102 and service manual more before bed. <- that sounds pathetic haha

thanks everyone for the help along the way so far!

Do you have an oil filter wrench? One that can bend at an angle? Thats what I used.

Just looking down the throats of the carbs won't tell us, or you, anything. The parts that gum up are inside the bowls, so if you suspect the carbs are dirty you'll have to pull them.

use this and a six inch ratchet extension to get the oil filter off:
                          [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-63600-Oil-Filter-Tool/dp/B0002SR4Q8"]Amazon.com: Lisle 63600 Oil Filter Tool: Automotive[/ame]

you should be able to find one at any auto parts store.

as for draining the tank, take out the petcock and you should be able to get all the old gas out...

Take the tank off and set the petcock to prime. This allows for fuel to flow constantly vice only when vacuum is present. That is how I drain my tank for storage if I can't ride it to empty.

And taking the carbs off isn't the hard part (done this probaby 150 times just in the last 2 months) it's digging into them that can get tricky. Just stay organized. I used four separate tupperware containers and set them up in front of whichever carb the parts they held came out of.

If i can't find that fancy import oil filter removal tool I'll see if i can get a filter band wrench with a bending handle. thanks for those tips guys!

putting the petcock on prime/hand pumping is how i initially drained the tank, should it be tipped just a certain way so all the gas accumulates in one spot over the petcock? i tried tipping to the right, left, back and front.

I don't suspect they are dirty, but i really have no way to tell as the previous owner could tell me nothing. I am going on the assumption that the bad gas made it into the carbs over time and fouled them up. I have another 40 days until i go for my temp permit and can actually ride the thing. This way as long as i get it running a few weeks before hand and everything is clean i can tackle any unforeseen issue's. Also, I am learning a lot.

I actually planned to use an old egg carton and label it in steps then do one carb at a time, old computer nerd trick

Unless you know the P.O very well always believe they were mechanically stupid and did no maintenance to the bike.

I think just by looking at how dirty the outside is that they havent been cleaned in a while and should be cleaned anyway, plus like me you have the time before you can ride so wouldnt you want to make sure that everything was done
