i brush mine with trans fluid it cleans real good and it lubes to then i use maxima chain lube

I add lube every time I take on fuel (best to date has been the Permatex #80075 chain lube, and I've tried dozens over the years -- bonus, the can fits under the Kat's seat with no issue); clean the chain every 1k miles or so with SludgeAway (Moose Racing Products) and their chain-cleaning tool. The SludgeAway also takes old chain grease off swingarms, rims, etc. wonderfully -- pour on rag, wipe away, rinse with garden hose.

Depends where the rust is. If it's on the outside plates, it's not a big deal, can be cleaned and lubed. If it's on the inside plates, rollers or sprocket teeth, time for new.
