  • New Kat 1100 Owner from south Texas

Howdy ALL, I just bought myself a very nice 1988 GSX1100 Katana with only 25K miles and a full Yoshi exhaust. I'm going to go completely through it and rebuild the carbs, brakes, new tires, fluids, filters, etc and then ride it everywhere. The bike has been sitting for almost a year, and yes, with gas in it unfortunately. The battery was dead, but the motor did crank on a jump start. I'm looking forward to this restoration. I've previously restored a 83 GS1100E and a 82 GS1100G, so this will be my 3rd Suzuki rebuild.

Welcome from a former Texan. San Antonio is my second favorite city after Santa Fe, NM. I rode my zzr1200 in San Antonio once and it was no problem...those Stairway to Heaven lanes going onto and off Loop 410 did almost give me the heebie jeebies though. Welcome, welcome, welcome!

Thanks to all for the warm welcome
I'm looking forward to riding the Kat and using this great forum. Pulled the carbs and 2 needle valves were so corroded and gummed up that I had great difficulty removing them. Surprise, the left front footrest bracket fell off in 2 pieces. I guess it was cracked at some point and when I removed the mounting bolts, it came apart. Can these be welded?

I've seen a rear set on an 1100 welded back together, don't know why the front wouldn't be able to. Might look ugly, but that's about it.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm looking forward to getting this baby back on the road. Unfortunately, when I was removing the left front footrest bracket, it fell apart into 2 pieces. I guess it was cracked and I didn't notice it. Does anyone know if these brackets can be welded? Does anybody have an extra bracket laying around?

Thanks for the welding suggestion. I took it to my local machine shop and he said it is anodized aluminum and can be welded back together, but he wanted $70 to do the job. I think I'll keep looking for a used one, maybe somebody will have a parts bike with it still on there.
