it's sheilding heat from the exhaust. It hooks on to your midpipe with some supplies fasters (read: hoseclamps)

My can has gotten more than a few black boot burn scuffs from my wifes boots that Ive had to scrub off, but fortunately none on the mid pipe; yet

How did the heat get through your gear bad enough to burn you? Which were you wearing, leather or textile pants? Did you lean your leg up against the pipe long enough for it to scorch through?
