decied to change the oil on the kat to day. used mobile 1 10 40 motercycle oil and a k & n filter. so I put in four quarts and the gauge on the bike doesn't read full. I don't think it needs more then four? and yes i checked it with the bike sitting up

You need to warm up the bike, then check the oil level too. It should take 3.7 qts with oil and filter replacement

Depending on how long you left the drain open, it might well take more than 4 quarts (mine typically takes 4.2 - 4.3). Start it, let it idle for a couple minutes, shut down and recheck the level 60 seconds later -- if it's low, add more.

NOTE THAT YOU NEED THE BIKE ON THE CENTERSTAND OR STANDING UP STRAIGHT -- on the sidestand, the bike isn't in the right position and will read artificially low. Ditto if checking while the engine is running.
