Shifter problems

I seemed to have lost spring tension on my shifter. When I shift up I have spring tension to return the shifter to the middle of the shift stroke but not when I shift down. I pulled the clutch and shift rod out after I laid the bike down, because the circlip on the shift rod came off and allowed the shifter to push in. This caused the gears to unmesh which would not allow me to shift at all. Should I have any kind of spring tension on the shift drum with out the shift rod in place? Also how does the spring fit on the shift rod? Can someone post a pic of the spring installed correctly?
