Hi, love the site so far, very helpful, and we (the bike and I) need a lot! I'm not new to this model, I had a 89 GSX750R when I was 15 back in 95, it was my first bike and I loved it! this one is my project bike, I also have a 07' C50 which I have perfectly customized and is just a great cruiser!
Here we go...
I picked the GSX600f up last week on CL. The guy wanted $700 for it, when I got there I almost left as the bike is ROUGH! It has no plastic, rusty chain/bolts/front bracket, no battery, and no way is worth $700... but I'm there... may as well hear it run (as promised by PO), we hooked up my portable jumpstarter and.... the key would not turn the ignition switch to on! it was stuck, at this point I told him thanks but no thanks and he said make an offer... my offer was $100, eventually he reluctantly sold me my new toy.
Got it home on the trailer and a little graphite in the ignition and the key turned! Was very excited, lights on, went to fire her up and she turned over! and over, and over.... wouldn't fire up...
I pulled the carbs and opened em up, (After dealing with about 20 already stripped screws!) it was very dirty, which was a good sign! One of the main jets was sitting in the float bowl, completely unscrewed, not such a good sign, two of the jet spacer/washer things were missing, the bladders all have pin holes... Butterfly valves all out of sync, floats all out of spec, idle adjustments all over the place, none even close to 2.5 turns... Cleaned and adjusted everything and for now used rtv to patch the diaphragm (temporarily until I at least hear the thing run) God I do not miss carbs, been so spoiled with fuel injection the last several years!
The next day, gave the gas tank a once over (somehow no rust, thank god)and gave it new fuel, checked the spark plugs (they is slight fouling so I'm gonna replace them), and went to fire er up, and... same, cranking all day, no luck...
but this time there was no gas leaking from my carbs, so some progress!
Tore it all back down last night and replaced all the fuel line, inspected for vacuum leaks,, checked the spark plug wiring... and it was 1243, so I fixed that, verified that I have spark, and stuck some rags in the carb and called it quits for the day, hopefully after I get it back together I will hear her run!
I have a few other issues I have found as well... the dash lights do not come on? no high beam? the flasher relay make a horrid buzzing sound when the left signal is on but the right signal works fine???
Well, I sure am glad ya'll are here and I'm sure I am going to be spending a lot of time on there forums over the next few month!
