If it won't run without choke on, the carbs are still dirty. Take a look in the wiki and read carbs 102 for a how to.
Yes they're still dirty. It's the pilot circuit that's clogged.
Yes, you need to soak them.
Yes for 24 hours.
If they were really gummed up, I'd recommend running fishing line through the internal carb passages to make sure they aren't still blocked. If they are, soak for another 24 hours.

Good call on the intake manifold orings though, lot of people forget about those.

What he said.... rule of thumb, clean them once you think your done, do it will eliminate having it run like poo.

Ok,so,I solved some problems.cleaned the carbs again. This time a soaked em and, gave them a thorough scrutinization upon reassembly.Found that the "starter jet" on cyl #3 had been drilled out significantly, don't know if that is a trick someone tried to get easier starts or,at some point someone who should not have been on there was in there. Also make sure there was no kinks in the fuel line.Checked compression and, have 185.195,195 and,210 across the board.checked valve lash.....suprisingly all were tight....every single one.Checked cam timing...good I mentioned before all carb o-rings and, intake manifold o-rings are new.what I have going on now is this, once warm the bike will idle all day long, will rev smoothly to redline....put it in gear for a test ride and,it will smoothly run right up to 7,000 rpm's and,then.....nothing.I can hold it in first gear at 7.000 and,it will not rev higher.feels like it's pulling a trailer at that sputtering, bogging or cutting out.Right when it should be starting to make power it just kinda noses over .take it back into the garage and,in neutral it will rev to the moon.....super frustrated

Default Bad test tool!

Unfortunately I found the culprit to be low compression. My "Harbor freight" compression tester was reading way high.Rented two from different auto parts stores and,I got way lower readings and, both consistent.tested each cylinder 4 times. Results were 90/120/120/150.I've wasted tons of time and, effort because I bought a cheap tool....lesson learned.I'm gonna yank the head off tonight,if it will pass my test method then, cylinders will come off as well. Will keep you all posted. As a great friend and, even better mechanic once told me.....Don't waste two days cleaning carbs if the motor has a dead hole.always check compression first.
