I think I'll install the one that came with the bike back on ........the proper way. Like I mentioned earlier, the bike I bought had its "flap" kinda folded in half and hanging down between the oil cooler and the top of the cylinder head. Served more to obstruct air flow than to directing air. That's what prompted me to ask about the "rubber flap" to start with.
I now know how it should be mounted.
I now also have a spare one I got with the parts bike.

oil cooler flap
has anyone ran any internal engine heat test, or external heat test? when im flying down the freeway my ankles get really hot. would that stop that? mines a naked rat bike so i got no faring, or even a speedo.Tyberious Rasputen Von-rotten Shagnasty

No, the rubber flap this thread refers to would not keep heat away from your ankles. Wear motorcycle boots and you wont feel heat off the engine, not that your ankles should be near the engine in the first place.1992- project katfighter

I went from a 750 Katana to the 1/2 fairing 1200 Bandit
No fairing exposes the rider to more heat IMOBlood , its in you to give! http://www.blood.ca/

yea usually i have boots on. its just riding back from work on my uniform. its not too big of a deal though. but that flap should probably stay on. if sitting at a light too long on a hot summer texas day i start getting a little bit of smoke comming out the front. the bike is still new to me. but i keep thinking its that flap thats burning as it rest on the header pipes.Tyberious Rasputen Von-rotten Shagnasty

You shouldn't have smoke coming out. I would look into that.1992- project katfighter
