Generally, glassing ABS fairings is not the best idea. ABS by nature is somewhat flexible, glass is more rigid and won't flex at the same rate as the abs. Also, the glass won't bond as well to the abs...sure, if you drill some holes, rough the abs up and do the glass well, it will hold up for a while, but it's really more of a mechanical bond and is more likely to crack or break free of the abs.

Going all abs makes for a better end product and less toxic fumes during the creation process.

Definitely not a simple cut it off and weld the new on process.
What about prepping the plastic, what do you need to do before you go at it with the soldering iron?

Definitely removing the paint on and surrounding the areas to be welded. If you can, slightly bevel the edges of the weld area to create a slight "v" or groove...other than that, not to much prep. Just make sure the plastic is clean and free of debri

That's what I tried, I hooked it up to a tempurature controller.
I had it cranked up before it started to cook.. That's why I think it's 450+F
Most soldering Irons are about 600 or so.. I'm going to look for a large one 300 Watts or so.. This all being for "fun" anyway...
