  • Asymetical Brake Rotors

    Has anyone else noticed this?
I was looking at a Harley parked at work the other day and noticed the rotors were asymmetrical. In my head I was saying "huh, while Japanese bikes like this Ninja (250) are......"
Son of a gun.. It's rotors were asymmetrical too..

    Harley:
    Starting at 6 o'clock. 1, 1, 2, 2 close to 3, 1, 1, 2 close to 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1..

    Ninja 250
Front and rear.. Notice starting at 6 o'clock two sets of 3 holes then a tighter set, big gap 3 big gap 3

While I could rampantly speculate about this.. Anyone know for sure?

    Whats the question BP?

I think I'm missing something somewhere here...

I think the question is "does BP have too much time on his hands? And if so , how can we better occupy him? " ....

Nah , I just don't have the time to read EVERY post like I used to . SOmetimes older ones I missed come back up and I see them and can make fun of people THEN . I mean damn , over 5300 members , over 4 pages of new posts every night ...... It takes like 4 hours to go through the new stuff every day . That REALLY cuts into my porn time .

Actually, I think BP asked TWO very distinct questions in his post...

My answer to these profound questions is 1) Yes, I've noticed and 2) While I can't speak for everyone, I am POSITIVE that I noticed.

I was talking about the holes drilled through the swept portion of the rotors.
The holes are totally asymmetrical. I could come up with lots of wise ass comments on why a Harley is designed that way but the Ninja 250 is that way too.. I haven't dug too deep but I wonder if it is limited to small displacement imported bikes and if the reasoning is similar to why Harley does it..
I guess the answer to the first question is no, since you didn't notice it in the pics I posted never mind on a bike on the street. And to the second question obviously no as well...

I would guess one of three reasons:

Stress - the random pattern reduces the stress risers. Some people go and drill their own rotors and they end up weakening them because the holes end up acting like perforations on a sheet of paper.

Noise - The random pattern is less likely to create the whistling noise commonly created by cross drilled rotors.

Vibration/chatter - The random pattern is less likely to excite a resonance of even just a consistent vibration. This would cut down on vibration under braking.

Those are my guess, but I am not a brake engineer.
