I am finding that I am getting better fuel millege now that I adjusted my valves. Does this happen or am I sniffing to many gas fumes?

I could see a performance increase (partially the valves, but more-over, the carb sync afterwards), but noticably better fuel mileage strictly from a change of valve clearances is usually doubious unless the valves were way off.
On the other hand, the performance increase might be keeping your throttle hand a bit more relaxed on the throttle (to get the same performance), which might translate into better mileage.

My mileage didn't change much after my first service that included valve adjustments, but it certainly ran smoother. Before it sputtered something terrible.MikeG
