  • I'm Not Dead Yet!

    Hi All,

I just wanted to let you know that I’m doing OK (other than a broken collarbone and bunged up hands). I was overwhelmed by the show of encouragement and sympathy by the people of this forum. Folks drove as much as an hour and a half to visit and help out around the house. I’m not sure how I’ll repay these acts of kindness. For those of you in the know, it’s been a very tough month for me and the accident was one of several issues. Your show of support has helped me tremendously.

My first goal is to mend and then get back on the bike as soon as possible. My personal suspicion is that the insurance company will write-off the bike so I will attempt to buy it from them and fix up the machine. Any help getting the necessary plastics and parts would be appreciated. If I can’t buy it back and the bike can’t be saved I’ll have to buy a new machine. I not sure I’ll buy another Katana because I doubt I can find a machine that will match my old one with all the upgrades. My mechanic and I both agreed my bike had more grunt than other Katanas he’s serviced.

My hand is getting a little sore so I’ll keep this short. Once again thank you very much for your support and I look forward to riding with you fine people again.

    Tony Nardelli (a.k.a. Kat-A-Tonic)

PS: I’ll keep you posted on the bike and provide more details on the accident. I know some of you want to know how the frame sliders held up. It seems they bent back without bending the frame. Bear in mind this was during a 115 kph (70 mph) crash and a 150 foot slide. More details will be forthcoming.

Tony, I'm so glad to see you back at the keyboard and in seemingly good spirits, given all that's happened. If there's an option of a buy-back on the bike, take it. If there isn't, have a bud swap the Ohlin for an OEM shock & remove any other high-value items before they take the bike away (resell that Ohlin!) -- or at least make sure that you take the receipts for the upgrades to the insurance company AFTER they come up with a total value for the bike... that way it'll get tacked onto the total.

BTW, do they have you wearing a brace for the collarbone? Should look like the back-half of a bra without cups, designed to pull your shoulders back and keep you from healing wrong...

      Cheers,

I'm going to buy it back if possible. I don't mind fixing it as it seems to be mostly plastics damage. If you could do me a favour and provide me with a receipt for the Ohlins (preferably one that reflects its true value), that would be great.

As for bracing, this is Canada so you only get a cheap gauze sling. I'm seeing the specialist tomorrow so hopefully I can get something better, even if I have to pay for it.

        Thanks again!

Call around -- any place that stocks wheelchairs, crutches, etc., should also carry a collarbone angel brace (what it's commonly called). But if it's been like 4 or 5 days since you went down, it probably won't make any difference (since the bone has already started to mend in whatever position it's now in).

Use your paypal receipt for the shock valuation. If they want more documentation, have them contact me. I don't want to get involved in any valuation frauds.

          Cheers,

This transaction wasn't done through PayPal. How would they get in touch with you?

Tony, what did you break? If you need a clavicle strap let me know, i could probably "reappropriate" one from work for you. I believe its the brace Cyber mentioned. It crosses your back and holds your shoulder in proper alignment. I work tonight and tomorrow night then i'm off on vacation, so if this is what you need let me know ASAP so i can pick one up this week.

Broke my right clavicle. I'm seeing a specialist tomorrow. I'll see about getting a proper brace. I'll let you know what he recommends. Thank you for your generous offer.

glad you're up and about. Goodluck on the kat re-purchase or maybe we'll see something a little more extreme like a GSXR?...

That's exactly what he needs... But it may well be too late by the time it arrived (bone already mended enough to hold position).
