  • Refurb Project Completed - Pics

Approximately eight months ago, in the middle of the night, my daughter's friend left this 1988 Katana 1100F in my driveway. He said that it needed a few "minor repairs". The next morning, in the light of day, I could see that despite a sound engine, frame, and forks, the rest of the bike was missing major parts, and much of what remained was broken, worn-out, rusted or corroded. I ignored the bike for two months, until my son gave me a $300 check as seed money. With no more excuses, and a little experience with bike repairs, I decided to budget $900, nicknamed the bike "Christine" and picked up a wrench.

Here it is six months and $1620.00 later. In hindsite, the project does not make much financial sense. Nevertheless, the experience was mostly enjoyable, and I'm somewhat proud of the result.

Thanks to my daughter and son for funding most the the purchases, and my wife for her patience and understanding. Also, many thanks to Mojoe for his encouragement and being a major source for replacement parts.

Mojoe - Rear brake rotor, rear wheel hub, front/rear sprockets, O-Ring chain, oil cooler, mufflers, seat, front/rear turn signals, reflectors, clutch/brake levers, chain guard, bar ends, left rider peg and bracket.

BikeBandit - Tires, bolts/washers/rubber pieces ($200) fuel hose clamps.

Ebay - Ignition/tank/seat lock set, fuse box, caliper paint.

Cycle Gear - Battery, tire mounting, license plate frame.

True value hardware - Fairing bolts, paint, epoxy, sandpaper, rubbing compound.

Kragen Auto - Oil, brake fluid, engine paint, headlight and turn signal bulbs, WD-40.

    Extreme Decals - Decals

    Southwest Glass - Mirror glass

California DMV - Title/Registration brought up to date.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any before pics. The fairings required many hours of repair (many cracks, holes, and scuffs). In addition, the previous paint job was poorly done. I did remove most of the paint, before laying down 4 coats of color and 4 coats of clear (11 rattle cans). It was sanded after color then after clear coat. Finally, it was rubbed out with compound.
