ranger Vehicle speed sensor

Anybody ever have to change out a V.S.S on a 02 ranger
Buddy has been getting weird read outs
When driving 100KPH he is getting a read out of 150KPH
He said in highway traffic his GPS is reading 100KPH when the speedo reads the 150

From what I have found the V.S.S is located in the rear differential housing and looks like a 5 minute job

I have replaced a few and can knock one out in about 20 minutes. It's a single bolt that usually is covered in crap and never wants to come out, thus the 20 minutes. Also make sure his tire size is correct for his year and model, that will throw the speedo way off as well.

I am thinking he would need to be running on the rims to be that big of a a difference
It is on stock size rubber, just dont want to throw a $30 part it
Would have thought it would stop working or intermitent not out of calibration

its possible as well that his speedo GAUGE is toast, but thats very uncommon. sensors are normally at fault.

You wont know for certain if the sensor is bad unless you have a Modis of a Genesis to actually read the output and compare it to the actual speed. Most transmissions have about 4 speed sensors, any of them could throw off the speedometer. I thought the sensor on the rear diff was for ABS readings not speed, but Im not 100%.

I think after 98 the ranger is fed the info for both ABS and speedo from there

No kidding. There is no possible way to get rid of the speed limiter on my Deville. If you disconnect the wheel speed sensors, it still has the transmission output speed to read from. If you disconnect that, it will calculate the cutoff by rpm/gear. When they say you can't go over 112 mph, they f'n mean it!

If it has the "DEATHSTAR" motor you dont want to try that to many times
