introduction and question

Hello my name is Aaron I ride a 2005 katana 600 with 4700 miles on it. It is ticking when it is running. I've had the bike about a month and it just seems like it doesn't have the take off power of the other bikes I've rode could that be the valves need adjusted? I have the valve cover off but I need to know valve clearance so I can check them. I really don't want to buy the repair manuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks aaron
