Here's a couple more dumb questions....
1) when I'm charging the battery, do I have to disconnect it first?
2) Does it matter where I post mechanic-type questions?

No you do not have to disconnect the battery.
However if you are charging a drained battery:
Make sure the battery is full w/ distilled water.
Open the caps to allow the gas to escape.
NOTE the gas is hydrogen.. No smoking!!

Yes it matters. Take a look at the index page. there are lots of different categories for "mechanic" type questions.
