Half the people I've asked say yes- the other half no....Do I need to use brand new bearings when I swap out my swingarm or what? The manual just says to inspect them, but apart from freeplay and them actually being on fire when I remove them, I wouldn't know a good bearing from a bad one.

Clean them (degreaser and a toothbrush), inspect again, then repack them with marine bearing grease, and your good to go.
If at anytime any thing comes apart, you need to replace as they are broken or worn.
