I am in the middle of some of the more expensive maintenance items. Just did chain n sprockets and just ordered a pr4 rear tire. Need to order a front next month. It made me think about what the cost per mile ends up being. Here is what I have found (approx)
Tires I got 9500 miles and they cost $400 = .042 per mile
Chain / sprockets 20k and cost $155 = .008 per mile
Oil changes at 5k and costs about $80 = .016 per mile
Total = .066 per mile
This is considering doing work yourself. I did not figure the cost of brakes since that could vary and is minimal. There are other costs like chain lube and fork seals / oil but also seem minimal costs. I also did not figure in insurance or registration because I already budget for those items. It doesn't change how much I will ride but was something I was just thinking about. Yesterday I rode 175 miles. It takes about $12 in gas so is cheap for a day of fun. It is still cheap fun but makes your brow raise when adding in he costs for the items mentioned. $12 for gas and $11.55 in maintenance costs for that 175 mile ride for a total of $23.55.
I thought it was interesting that the maintenance cost was almost equal to the fuel cost. It makes me want to transfer whatever my gasoline bill was into a MC savings account each time so that when replacement time is due, the money is already there.
