  • Can i spray?

I have a compressor that is a 15 gallon 3 or 3-1/2 hp and is 4.9 scfm @ 40 psi and 3.5scfm @ 90 psi- can i paint my bike with it and what gun can i use?

Yes you can, I found a hvlp touch up gun works really well. Mine turned out VERY good. I would put on a moisture filter on the compressor though.

I literally paid $25 for a touch up gun and did bc/cc. I had bought a larger one but never got good results.let me find my thread and u can see. Prep work is 90% of the job. I found regular rustoleum gray primer worked better than auto primer you sprayed. It dries faster and can immediately see if it reacts.

As long as you don't drop below the min requirements for the gun you should be ok. If your compressor can't keep up then you might have to do the shoot-and-wait game each time the pressure gets low.

i have pretty much the same compressor as you and i purchased a top feed HVLP gun from Home Depot (husky brand) and it worked great. I have had this gun for about 5 years and have sprayed a lot of different materials with it and it still sprays great.

What are you spraying as far as paint goes? That will dictate what gun you can spray with. I sprayed my bike with one like this, http://www.tptools.com/p/2275,370_HV...rimer-Gun.html on a 20 gal 5 HP comp.
Also if you want you moisture trap to work better, put a length of hose between it and the compressor, say a 25 or 50 footer, that will give the air time to cool so the moisture condensates out in the trap. I highly recommend a small filter at the gun as well.
Disposable in-line spray gun air filters remove moisture, oil vapor, and dirt. Help to reduce paint defects. Mount at spray gun. High-flow design minimizes pressure drop to spray gun. 1/4" (M) NPT air inlet and 1/4" (F) air outlet. 2 pk.

I was looking at this gun- http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...0615_200320615

it might be the same as in that other link- will this one work even though the scfm ratings are higher than my compressor

I also put another moisture trap right at the gun plus on the compressor. I had this set originally http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...Product%20Page and it sprayed like CRAP. Only the touch up layed down decent. I broke the top cover and then bought another touch up and it was great. I think they are all basically made in china and you need to learn how to "tune" the gun. I had better results with higher pressure and a little more material. Trial and error. Make sure you get onr thst has that adjustable pressure reg at the gun.

I thought this was gonna be another NAWS thread...

Ya you can spray with it, but how far you get before you run out of air will be the problem. But on something the size of a bike, I think you should be OK. The 1.4mm tip is a good all around tip for spraying finish coats and thinner primers. A touch up gun - generally a 1.0mm tip - will lay the paint down better in inexperienced hands but lays out metallics and pearls kinda wacky for my liking.

I went to lowes and picked up a 1.4mm tipped siphon feed gun for about 50 bucks ill give it a try- my dad has sprayed multiple cars and its almost exactly what he used and its scfm rating is perfect for my compressor

Siphon fed??? That takes more than gravity fed hvlp. That is 60's technology there and I'm not even sure you can spray bc/cc with that gun? Read this before you open it.

I meant more air pressure and volume plus material. Good luck.
