I don't want to talk to anyone when I am riding. The call can wait.

I have the scala rider Q2 which can be added to any helmet. I turn it on while I'm riding b/c I'm basically on call 24/7 from work. Plus it has the added benefit of being able to listen to FM or you can hook your MP3 player up to it. The volume is good and still allows you to hear all of your surroundings.

yes, they are DOT approved. most places allow for in helmet speakers. ear buds are usually illegal, but in helmet speakers are ok.

If you do decide to go with the Scala or a similar alternative, I highly recommend ebay, I got mine brand new with shipping to Hawaii for about $50 cheaper than retail from most online vendors.

I have a blue tooth earpiece, but I can't imagine using it in a helmet. Maybe for tunes, but not for answering calls. Couldn't reach the answer/send button and I can't make the voice activated commands work when I'm someplace quiet. I say "call Bob" and it asks me, did you say send a text message to Jennifer. Thats after the voice training...totally messed up.

ha ha... i couldn't imagine anyone using an actual bluetooth earpiece with a helmet, it'd be quite funny to watch them try and reach the button. with the helmets and the various bluetooth add on systems, they have a piece that sits outside with large buttons so you can press them with gloves on, then speakers and microphone ran to the spots you want them

With the Scala you don't have to use a button to answer it, even if you're phone isn't voice activated you just talk into the mic when it rings and it will answer. I can't use voice activated dialing, but I don't have any problem answering calls. And having some good tunes on a ride is a huge perk.

I have been looking at this one for about a year now.

What appeals to me is the fact that you can use it for rider2rider comms. I could care less about using my phone with it. As a matter of fact the only reason I would connect my phone to it is for streaming music wirelessly. I would just let the damn thing ring and not answer it. As for rider2rider comms tho, me and the wife go riding together a lot and having to wait for a stop to say, "did you see that about 4 miles back?" kinda blows.

here is a review of that helmet

And here is another one with what looks to be the same bluetooth controls, but from a different company. I have been following this one for about 6 months now. Man I wish I had money.

I have the Element bluetooth by o'neil and I think its a waste of money!!! The speaker is honorably placed so you cant hear any one and they are uncomfortable. If you want one that bad Ill sell you mine. Its a size large. But thats just my 2cents.

Bluetooth has a lot of potential. 2.x introduced stereo (4 is being finalized). I have a google phone and the navigation is awesome. I would love to be able to punch in GPS coordinates, grab a playlist and have google talk me through the turns. Unfortunately, helmets are lagging behind in offering a setup with good stereo sound, controls that can be manipulated with gloves on mated with a nice quiet helmet. I am hoping this will be the year.

Even if you just ride for commuting to and from work, you have to watch out for the IDIOTS that do not see you ! I think you have to be focused on everything around you. I listen to my Ipod when I ride to work and when I ride the Twisties. There are a few good remote controls for an Ipod. I would never want to talk while riding even to get directions.
