  • Build Your Own Swingarm?

    Is it feasible?
I am thinking about maybe making something like this:

Yeah I am a new guy but I am good with my hands, and want to make something completely different.

    Winter Project:
    2002 Katana 600
    -Buell Seat
    -Custom Swingarm?
    -Custom Fairings?
    -Major Cleaning of everything

Definitely feasible. As long as you've got access to a mandrel bender, welder, and materials, you should be able to fab something up.

Only thing to do is try Measure twice cut once.

I usually end up measuring about 16 times.... but I bet he gets the idea.

Might not be a bad idea to source another stock swing arm to use for measurements.

I measure all day at work. When I build **** at home, I just wing it.

I've got a stock 98+ swinger that I've been meaning to cmm for a long time (actually did it once, but it's a long story). Only thing I don't have it time to do it.

Engineering it to make sure it is strong enough, and have the correct stiffness wont be all that easy (keep torsion in mind). Once you have it designed, building it should not be very difficult.

I hope you are an EXPERT welder. I would not trust my life with anything less.

Yeah I am going to try and model up in a 3D modeling program first. Run it through some FEA analysis and see how strong it is. Call me a nerd but I like my life.

Sounds like my initial plan. keep us posted of your progress (especially me). I'm not too up to speed on FEA software (purposly moving myself away from that side of the industry, one of these days I won't have an office anymore, I'll actually be on the shop floor ). I was gonna do it the old fashioned way

Yeah I am a college kid so I got access to all sorts of cool stuff. And I usually got a friend who knows what is going on with the software I am using.
