Gas _cap_ corrosion

My gas cap is corroded pretty bad, and was wondering if there was anything I could/should do about it while I'm POR-15-ing the tank. The key is getting hard to turn and I'm worried about that seal around the filler neck. Any suggestions?

You could take the rust off with a metal polish and diligence (or replace the cap), and coat the metal afterwards with some vasoline or dielectric grease... as for the key hole, graphite spray.

Q: did you go off and leave the bike parked with a partial tank for a year or two (or perhaps the previous owner)?

I would also replace the drain hose and make sure the drain passage is working correctly -- I've only seen problems like that on bikes where the water content was a serious problem.

Can't you just take the cap off and scrub it , then hit it with a rust remover ?
