If you had started working on the bike instead, your wife would have learned to paint, remodel, do shutters, install cabinets... while you were out tinkering on the bike a little and avoiding all the headaches

I'm laughing so hard right now.... I don't mean to rib you, it's just really funny from my twisted perspective.

Why is it that I don't see the humor in this

Actually, my wife is a little sneaky. See, if there's something she wants done and I tell her I'll do it, she'll nag me until my head hurts. Then, if that doesn't work she'll start calling people in and getting quotes figuring that will get me in gear. If that doesn't work, she'll hire someone to do whatever job it is that I've put off. That usually puts me through the roof, but she's done it before and I wouldn't put it past her to do it again . However, since we've had kids she doesn't work outside the home anymore so she may be hesitant to pull that trick since she doesn't bring home a paycheck. I just don't know if I'm willing to risk it

We've been married almost 14 years and since that's my only complaint, I guess I'm not really complaining...

well I work on my bike mostly cuz I have this really big kickass shop to work in, and all the tools I need at my disposal. if I am missing a tool, my dad or bro have it.
so taking my bike into a shop would be a waste of money. besides, if I took my bike or car to a mechanic, my dad would never let me live it down. I grew up with him drilling the belief into me that a "real man" never takes his problems to someone else to fix. and you never call a repairman to come into your home to fix something. in all my years of living (41 of them), I have never seen my dads car go into another persons garage, and never seen a repairman visit his home. that's just the way it was.
occassionally I did take my bike into the shop for some work, but mostly cuz I had no place to do it myself, until now.

so to answer your question, no....it won't make you a better rider, but it will give you more pride in what you ride.
I don't have a short temper. I just have a quick reaction to bullshit.

I made the mistake of taking my car to a shop to have the clutch replaced. a few months later the clutch went out again...or so i thought because i couldn't get it into gear. i worked at a auto repair shop at the time so i had all the tools needed. i spent about a month staying after work and working on the car. i have never pulled a transmission in my life but with careful steps and a haynes repair manual i got it out. upon careful inspection i noticed one of the tranny mount bolts was over torqued and snapped the aluminum on the tranny. i was pissed to say the least because i was 99.9% sure this happend when the clutch job was done. how did i know that it just didn't break on its own...there was JB weld where someone tried to rig it up just to last for awhile to take the heat off of them. to make a long story short i still had the piece that snapped off and i sent the tranny out to be welded. they did an excellant job of welding it back together and i popped the tranny back in and havn't had any problems with it since. total cost of repair $75 for the weld job and about $15 worth of tranny fluid. after that experience i try to fix all problems that i can with both the car and kat. plus it gives you a good feeling knowing that you did the job, its done right and you saved a crap load of money.
