  • Red Kote not dry

I had to fix a hole in my tank and I used liquid steel and that worked well. However in doing so I drained the tank and let a lot of rust unsettle itself and eventually go into the carbs. I had my carbs professionally cleaned and synced. I used some Orielly brand rust remover along with 2 nuts and shook the crap out of the tank. I then went to a car wash and used their detergent and rinse to rinse out what I broke lose and clean the tank.

So far so good I think. I used a blow dryer to dry out the tank and still waited overnight and used red kote the next day. Here is where things get kind of bad, I did not read carefully enough and after adding 1 qt. to my tank which it suggested for tanks under 12 gal. I failed to drain out the excess. I rolled the tank and let it sit on as many angles as possible but now I am up to 72 hours of waiting and a few hours of using a blow dryer and some of it still seems a little gooey. It wont come off unless you scrape but my tank looks like it was lined with a fruit roll up.

I cant afford another tank atm and need to get the bike back up for commuting and save my gas money. Would you run it? Should I run it? Am I going to hate myself when I have to get the carbs cleaned again? Is there a way to fix it? Thanks!

Also I am running fuel filters so I was thinking about trying it regardless just as long as you think that none of the red ote can get past the filters maybe just gum it up and clog them... I need to make sure nothing gets to the carbs I cannot afford to fix them again parts and labor was over 400!

Do not use the tank unless the coating is dry, and fully cured. If you do, it will not prevent the gas from disolving it and putting into your system.

Fuel filters only stop larger particles from flowing past. It will not stop fine or disolved particles mixed with the fuel.

Any idea on how long I will have to wait. Its hard to see any change between now and the day before. It still smells like the solution and the instructions said it would only be done when it no longer has the smell.

I would probably strip the red kote out, and go with another product such as POR 15. Reading the instruction sheet for the Red Kote, it sounds like you have some pockets/areas where the Red Kote skinned.

POR 15 makes a kit for removing previous coating for just this reason.

Redkote applied too thick will NEVER dry completely. I'm with the others and say strip it and pot-15. Other than that you may try usink m.e.k. to desolve the pooled up redkote and get some of it out
