    2 options...

It can be done in the same process as a normal liscense. 2 part, 1 written test, 1 is a driving test. https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/driver/motorcycle/

Written test can be taken any time, normally. You can go ahead and get that out of the way anytime before the driving test. The written test pass will get you a permit to ride a motorcycle on the road with some minor limitations. It's a little more specific to motorcycles, and there is an online motorcycle manual by the DMV you can download for free to see the kind of info they ask about. (manual download is the first link on the above NC webstite) Go ahead and get that, read it, get the test portion out of the way. This will allow you to legally practice riding on the road.

They changed the permit options here in NC not long ago. The first permit is valid for 12 months, you can renew 1 time for 6 months... then it's required for you to pass a driving test and get the full endorsement. This was to stop people from just permanently renewing the permit option.

The above mentioned manual will have the specifics on the driving test. You will be asked to do a few maneuvers in a course to show you know how to ride/control the bike. Driving tests normally have to be scheduled in advance.

That is a quick option if your just wanting the endorsement and already an experienced rider.

IF your not an experienced rider, do option 2...

Option 2 is take a MSF course in place of the driving test. You will still need to take the written exam at the DMV. The MSF course is going to go over in much more detail with practical application, a lot of great information and help in how to ride and control your machine on the road. It's invaluable in what it helps you learn. Even experianced riders can learn from this course.

http://msf-usa.org/ for more info on the MSF courses.

You can do the written before or after the MSF. If you have a long wait for the MSF course, go ahead and get the written test done and a permit, you can practice a little bit that way legally on the road.

I have experience riding a 250 dual sport and a 500 dual sport. I never had titles for them so I just road around anyway. Do you think the first option would be best for me in this case? Thanks for all the info
