  • pre98 with post98 caliper swap

I have a 95 katana... i bent the front rim so i bought a set of 98+ rims. I think the wheels were off an 01 and they do have the speedo pickup...

When i put the rim on the front brake calipers rubs on the rim...

So i bought 01 calipers however they don't fit the bolt pattern. What else do i need to get the 01 calipers to fit? Should I just grind down the old pre caliper so it clears the new wheel???

What part of the 95 calipers rubs what part of the wheel? That rim should be a straight bolt in for your forks. Did the rotors come with the 98+ front rim? If so, are they straight or dished like the 95 rotors? Are both calipers rubbing on the rim or just one of them? I haven't heard of this issue with swapping front rims before. Could you take a picture to possibly better show what is happening?

I can't think of a reason they should rub... the clearance between the spokes is pretty huge, and the 17" rims would have the same clearance along the rim, even if the new tire is 1/2" wider....

Or are we talking rubbing on the rotors?..

The brake caliper rubs on the rim... i will take a picture when i get home. Could the forks be bent causing it to rub?

The 1998-2006 front wheel does not use a cable housing at the front axle to monitor the speedometer.

The post Kats use an electronic VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) at the countershaft (front) sprocket for the speedometer.

The 98-02.... or 98-01 "i think" not sure on the change over year, but the wheel does include the speedo pickup even though the speed pickup is off the case on the original bike.

the 03-on does not have the pickup for the pre 98's

i know that for sure because the wheel i have has the pickup

I'm just not sure on the calipers i will check the forks when i get home

You are absolutely right Raider. 03+ has the wider center and the flat rotors. They also dropped the speedo provision on those rims. 98-02 are supposed to be a direct bolt in for the pre's. Rims, rotors and everything are interchangeable. A picture of the issue is definately going to help out in this matter.

rims and rotors what about calipers? as far as i can tell i was looking at ebay and the forks for new style kats was WAY different so i think i biffed on the calipers and freaked out when my forks were really just bent...

Since you have the speedo hub assembly on the front wheel you do not have a Post (1998-2006) Kat front wheel.

Exhibit 1: 1995 Katana (600, I'm assuming) front wheel parts fiche. Part number 10 is the speedometer assembly. This is your vehicle.

Exhibit 2: 1998 Katana (750, as Bike Bandit does not list a 600) parts fiche. There is no speedometer assembly on the front axle.
This is what you believe you have. Even the shape of the spoke are different.

You could very well have a Bandit 600 wheel.

Sorry guys, but you are not "listening" (reading) what they guy is saying, and he's right....

The WHEELs from 98-02, on the hub, have the notches that allow you to mount a pre-speedo to it. 03+ do not have those notches.

He very well CAN have a Kat post wheel and still use the pre speedo. You can see the "notches" here on this 99 600 Kat wheel where the speedo would fit from a pre if you were mounting the rim on a pre.

                              I stand corrected. I'll shut-up now.
