  • Painting cowl

Finally got my seat cowl ready for prime and paint

Went to my local specialist auto paint shop with my paint code obtained from colorite as per this thread : http://katriders.com/vb/showthread.p...ht=paint+codes

It's Candy Grand Blue YC2 fyi.

I was told that I would need 3 cans, 1 silver base coat, 1 YC2 topcoat, 1 clear laquer. Total cost £40:00.

Apparently the topcoat is 57% clear in order to get the 'candy' effect and the silver basecoat shows through the topcoat. He said I would be better taking it to a paint shop and get someone to shoot it for me as with that much clear in the aerosol it would be difficult to get an even coat with no runs.

Just wanted some feedback from you guys? Btw this would be my first 'serious' attempt at spray painting .

If you are in any way unsure about it, get someone to help you. If you have never painted anything before, a candy color is quite the 'trial by fire' method of learning. Candies are tricky, like the paint shop guy said, they run easy, and they have to be sprayed evenly. If you put more paint on in one spot than another, it will show as a darker spot in the color coat. Candies also show any dust or dirt you get in it worse than any other paint. The candy will 'pool' around that little speck of crud and you'll have a dark speck in the color right where the crud is on the cowl. I am not trying to talk you out of trying it for yourself, but just letting you know what to expect...

I agree with Teddy. The candies and pearls are tricky to spray. I have only ever sprayed 1 car with pearl. It looks good from a distance, but you can see the "pooling" that teddy was describing if you look close enough.

Thanks for the replies, guess I'll be looking for a local sprayshop

If I decided to get a compressor/spray gun, what should I look for? Electric/psi/type, etc?
