  • motorcross boots vs racing boots

Well, I am in the market for a pair of boots to use on the track. I went to motorcycle-superstore and found that motorcross boots usually are a little less then the racing boots. I can tell there are a lot of external differences (motor cross looks a lot like ski boots) but are there any functional differences? Please keep in mind that I am going to use for only for street and track riding. I don't have a dirt bike and I don't plan on getting one either.

    thanks

I would guess that street boots are designed to resist abrasion more (asphalt). Hopefully someone more knowledgable will chime in. In my opinion, any boots are better than tennis shoes!

For lots of reasons I would like a pair of motoX boots.
      Higher, price, protection..

But I just don't know if they would offer the flexibility needed for street riding.

I can't imagine there should be flexibility issues, moto-x'ers have to shift too, right? If you are a knee dragger, mount up a scuff pad on the side of the boot and be good to go? I just hope it doesn't make you want to throw a foot out when cornering.

          1. Most MX boots have buckles or clasps of some kind. Buckles = SCRATCHES on your plastics

          2. Street/track boots are contoured more for a "forward-leaning" position, much like a ski-boot. MX boots tends to have more of a 90 degree angle at the ankle, which would be a little more uncomfortable IMO. They are also quite stiff when compared to a street boot. They are designed this way since MX riders plant their FOOT in a corner instead of a knee. This lessens the chance of a broken ankle when planting your foot.

          3. They're friggin heavy compared to a street/track boot

Personally, I'd pay the extra 30 bucks for a good street boot vs. buying a boot DESIGNED for dirt.

I've yet to see the GP guys riding the track in MX boots.

I would worry about popping a buckle open in case of a slide.

I guess this shows that you could use motorcross boots on the street:

I have both mx boots and street boots

the street boots wont kill your plastics and they will flex quite a bit more in teh sole and ankle

mx boots have differnt types of protection - as for shifting - on a mx bike you tend to shift with your entire leg - on a street bike its more with a flip of your foot

mx boots WILL DESTROY your paint - look at any well ridden mx bike and you'll see that the paint is totally gone where the foot pegs are

Trust me - get street gear for street and dirt gear for dirt - They are designed differently to give you different protection.

Most MX boots are stiff when you first buy them...I mean REALLY stiff. Shifting can be a challenge when they're new...

I like Joe Rocket's Super Street boots. They come in two heights, and they are super comfortable. I got mine for $115 and they were worth every penny. Buy off e bay and you'll get a better price.
