  • Kat for size

I was on my buddy's R1 today (disgusting fast), and I'm looking for a Katana. I didn't like the fact that I can barely touch the ground on the R1. How's the Katana for size? I'm a short guy, 5'4" with short legs. My current bike is a V-star, but I know that sport bikes are considerably taller.

Is there a chance i'll have major problems on a 600?

Well, take that the seat height of the 98+ is 31" (maybe a tad more). If your inseam is shorter than that, you'll have problems. You can always lower the bike or shave the seat. I'm 6' with a 33" inseam and can raise myself off the seat at a stop. Take your cues from that.

I'm 5'5" and with my pre-98 kat 600 lowered 2", i can flat foot my bike.

FYI - The Kats seat are a lot narrower compared to an R1 or any other SS bike.

Figure, stock, you need a 31.5" inseam to straddle the seat. As your weight goes up, the suspension compresses under it, so for a 200 lb rider, the inseam requirement (with stock suspension) drops to 30 - 30.5".

Lowering the bike can net you two inches in general, 2.5" would be probably about the max before you critically screwed up ground clearance and handling went totally to pot. That's an half-inch in the tires (using 60 profiles instead of 70's), an half-inch in the seat (replace the foam with a denser, thinner foam or replace the seat with an aftermarket saddle custom-tailored to your height), and an inch or so on the suspension (replace the suspension links, aka dogbones, plus raise the fork tubes through the triple-trees a bit). Note that shorter dogbones are not generally available for the pre-98 Kats because of their curved shape, and you'd have to custom-fabricate some by cutting an existing pair and having them rewelded (last I heard, you can still buy 98+ dogbones in any size/height from neoublie, who will manufacture them to order).

              Cheers,

That's just plain cruel. But of course, I could run up and give you a good punch in the balls before you even knew it was coming.

I am picking it up tomorrow, but here is one from the seller

It's been laid down, but no frame damage, and no cracks. Next thing I'll need is to figure out how to buff out the scratches and match the paint.
