  • Got my chain and sprocket kit!

The one that came on my bike only lasted 4000 miles (it was new when I got it). I don't think it was even an O ring though. The next chain I got was a DID gold xring and I got vortex aluminum sprokets and it lasted about 10k.

This time I got a the RK Gold w/ vortex steel sprokets from a-zpowersellers.com which I think is who CP recommended. I ordered on the 7th and it came today so shipping was pretty quick! Anything to look out for when installing it? I don't have any special tools but figured I could probably get some kind of riveter or link press locally (hopefully)

You will defiantly want to pick up a riveter, and a torque wrench. Other than that it is a pretty easy job. The hardest part is just removing the nut that holds the front sprocket on.

To remove the old chain I just used a dremel to cut it in half.

Can I use just a regular ole pop riveter?

No, you will need a chain riveter.

Oh shoot your in Greenville!! They have the riveter at Cycle Gear for about $100.00

$100 holy crap!! I spent all my money on the chain. The place next door to cycle gear will do it for $90. There has to be another way to do it??

smash the rivets with a hammer. or some say a bb and a c clamp. i have friends that smash their rivets with a hammer and run the chain no problem for thousands of miles till the chain gave up. or borrow from someone.

So you put a bb over the rivit and press it down w/ a c clamp to smoosh the top of it? or just smash the top w/ a hammer to smoosh the top? That's an interesting idea. I'm tryign to find one to borrow but no one has one. I'll take a look at it tonight and see if I can use the hammer or c clamp idea

Thanks for the replies and fred, let me know if you have any ideas!!

I don't see how well the hammer idea would work too well unless you are removing the swingarm to put the chain on, But the BB & C clamp sounds like a great idea. I have a C clamp but no BB.

Personaly I used a mini chain press and got it to work for me. The press isn't in quite the same shape , But it worked. The chain press is another tool that will come in handy on this job too.

Is your bike still drivable? If so and you could get it to my place I would be glad to give you a hand, I just did my chain and sprockets last week myself.

I am only about 30 miles south of greenville in the Fountain Inn/ Gray Court area.

The raised edge of a nickle in a c-clamp can work in a pinch.

you can get a Motion Pro "toolbox" size chain rivet tool off of bikebandit.com for like $11.50 man. don't let anyone talk you into dropping 90/100/etc on it.

Tell me how your new sprocket is performing. Did you add a few teeth? I dropped a tooth up front and did notice a difference. I have an 06 750 Kat and live in Greenville as well. E-mail me at

Well I'm not sure what I had before but it had 45 and the new has 46 teeth. I got the rear from cycle gear and it was supposed to be a stock geared aluminum vortex sprocket. So I don't know if what I had was stock or if what I have now is stock. oh well.

I got the old sprokets and chain off and the new put on but I'm waiting for a riveter that will hopefully be here tomorrow. I have a friend of a friend who works for the honda dealer. If not, then I'm either going to try the bb trick, use a punch, or see if I can find a bicycle riveter, or as a last resort, put the bike on the truck or the trailer and drive it over to the local shop to have them hit it w/ the riveter. I can't believe I ever paid $90 to have this done!!!!!!

You guys that are close, I am taking next week off from work and my buddy w/ a cbr f2 and his bro w/ a fjr1300 will be riding a lot that week. If you guys are interested in joining us let me know. I'm sure we'll be hitting up caesers head and 178.

Be careful with that link . If you smash it too tight , it'll bind . Don't wanna do that . And it'd probably be easier to mess up NOT using the proper tools . Just a word of warning from someone who's broken alot of stuff using the wrong tool for the job ....
