  • Stainless Steel Brake line question...

So yesterday I replace the brake line on the kat (the old brake lines had never been replaced, date was 12/97 on them what the hell). I bought Russes brake lines and I notice that they said for off road use only. So my quess is that they are not DOT approved.

    1. Will this be an isssue?

Not sure if any of them are DOT approved but I could be wrong...I have Galfer ones and have never had a problem with them...I think mine said for race use only but I use them all the time and "knock on wood" have never had a problem...

      OK what was #2??
Nearly every aftermarket part is labeled "off road use only"
      Why? One word: Lawyers..

Properly installed SS lines are better than stock.
In fact since the "life" of stock lines is 5 years it seems
any one running lines older than that would be violating
"safe operation" of a bike.. Bear in mind that new factory
lines are only "approved for street use" if installed by a
factory athorized shop. And there is still no garantee that they
are installed as well as aftermarket lines you do at home...
So the only real answer is lawsuit prevention...

Off Road use gets you out of having it DOT approved (a time consuming and expensive endeavor) A lot of car parts are the same way. This is only REALLY an issue if you live in certain states. California is BIG on smog control and unless an engine part is CARB legal (for cars) it's illegal for use on a CA car. Kind of like how CA Kats have special breathing and venting and whatnot to meet their standards. For SS brakelines, i'm pretty sure SS anything is TECHNICALLY illegal for use on a vehicle. However they are better than stock. The reason was explained to me once by a Ford Master Tech, but i've since forgotten it.

Some of the Spiegler kits are DOT-labeled, but not all; there are probably a bunch of others that are. I bought a full set of Russell lines at a local shop for about half the price--the manager talked me out of the Spiegler's and into them.

This is a shop that caters to racers and track nuts, and it is what the put in all of their race bikes and any street machines that come in without a preference for one of the high-end names (Spiegler, Galfer, etc). The "meet all DOT specifications" and are 50-state legal, but don't come in the nifty colors and have slightly rougher exterior metal finishing (at least mine do). According to this, they shouldn't be an issue for inspection, resale, or function.

Something tells me my 92s lines are standard too, but I need a caliper rebuild here ASAP so I may as well put some SS lines on while i'm in there.

dude, your lines are expensive. I can get gaffer (front and rear) for that price. even less. Russell was less as well.

So....I have to ask.....what makes your kind so special to warrant the higher cost?
I am not bashing your offer....just curious why the price difference.

Dude Galfers are not that great. They are cheaper but the coatings fade on them. They are not guaranteed for life. Last time I checked you get just the lines no new hardware for them. I mean if you want them than thats cool. They are only a 24 strand where as the HEL are 32 strand braided lines. More strands to provide even better stopping power. All these lines are made to what ever length you want measured from fitting to fitting. When I was working for Cycle Gear, i had to call galfer to order a custom rear line for a bike that had an extened swing arm. They never got it right. To this day I do not think the customer ever got the correct line from them. Where as with these lines you give me the measurements and they are made to your length specs. I run these lines and love them. I have rode bikes with galfers and goodridge lines and they do not respond as well as these. I understand cost mojoe but you know as well as I do this is one place that you do not go cheap on.

I think most lines are 16 strand, his are 32, which means they're thicker and stronger. Really its not a bad price overall though (most i've seen are in the 115-130 range). I'll keep you in mind HS. Maybe thats what I meant to ask you about earlier today...

Hey....I didn't mean any offense by it....even though it might sound that way. In all seriousness, I don't really have a clus about the quality, and quite honestly, as long as they don't blow apart, that is all I care about. I stop quite well with my stock lines.

One thing I didn't like with Gaffer and Russell is that they only have 2 line kits for the front. I want to keep my stock setting of 3 lines....and I will need the rear extended. Plus I want to do the clutch line as well.
So do I get some kind of deal for taking 5 lines?

Hey....question for you. Is it possible to just get about 15ft of the line and the banjos? No assembly.

Can you make the Oil lines? I really wanted to get braided Oil lines..not because the would be any better but because they would look nice...any chance of it?
