  • Master link flew off!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was at break today from work, I noticed the spring clip was missing from the master link. Holy Sht!!!! I was doing about 90 to 95mph going to work. In case you guys think I was drive reckless this is 4:30 in the morning on a lonely toll road with no cars in site. Looks like it was recent cause the area where the clip was , was still shiney. Go to bike shop, power sports, and buy a new clip. I also buy a press tool so I could use the rivit type instead. When I get to work I notice the guy gives me the wrong tool. I return it but he doesn't have the right one I need. So I'm back to the spring clip. You guys think this was a freak thing or just stick with rivit type?

I'd go with the rivet if I were you, gpggnnn. Meanwhile, if you keep the link system, carry a spare master link and a couple clips under the seat at all times... when you lose the chain underway, you'll find the chain again, but the clip & the master link will mysteriously vanish at that instant.

If you are going to use a clip type (I have one on my Katana now) then clean the link completely and use RTV to lock the clip in place.

I've lost TWO chains while riding . Both had clip-type masters that were installed by a shop . I don't use clip-types no more . I DID put one on the bike I was building , and did like Meany said and siliconed it REAL good . It was a BITCH to take off again , so I guess I did SOMETHING right .

Just wondering how many miles on the chain? My biggest fear about losing the chain is having it lock up the rear at high speed.

Chain has only 3k on it. It's about 1 month old. I am making a riviting tool so I can repace it with a rivit type link. I posts some pics when I get it done.

there is a right way and a wrong way to put on that clip.
you need to make sure the closed end is facing in the direction of the chain rotation.

just a little info in case you did not already know this.

Wow, I didn't know this. I went out to check my bike and noticed it is on the wrong direction. I put the one that flew off in the wrong position also. Thanks Mojoe.
