  • Exhaust question???

I have been searching for a while and need some advice. I would like to get an exhaust for my Katana but not till next year. I getting all the maintenance work done first. A few questions first?

    1. What is a slip on exhaust? I think is an exhaust that simply bolt on to the stock header?

    2. What would the advantage be on a complete exhaust?

    3. Noise level, what to look for? I would like a nice tone but not too excessive.

    4. What are the best manufactures, and materials to look for?

    5. Are cops looking for loud noise exhaust, like on car?

    TIA

Most of these topics have been beaten to death, you may want to narrow your search alittle more. But I will take a stab at it.
    1. Slip on's generally a new can that bolts directly onto the mid-pipe.
    2. Higher rate of exhaust flow leaving the head.
    3. Hindle has a great sound but rather expensive compared to a d&d which is very loud but kind of cheap.
    4. ^ Really your choice on this one, but you may want to look at some carbon fiber if you have the extra cash.
    5. Yes with loud pipes will give you alot of attention some of it unwanted.
In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

      Re: Exhaust question???

      1. Pretty much right on.

      2. Larger primary tubes that attach to the motor, providing better flow throughout the exhaust... however it will cause you to install a jet kit where adding a slip on won't. If you don't already have one.

      3. There is a sticky in the "How-To" section of sound clips from different exhausts. Try listening to some of them. Everyone likes different sounds. I love my Yoshimura, but some people can't stand them.

      4. They are all about the same honestly. Main difference is design and sound.

      5. ... for the most part... it just draws more attention to you if you happen to be doing something stupid.

One way to tell if you have a slip on or a full exhaust.
Compare this pic with your exhaust.
You ought to be able to see enough of it though the
            fairings..

Can't really see enough to know if you have a full system, a slip on, or a complete factory set up.

We need a good pic of the header behind the front wheel, and the muffler itself.

One way to know is if the headers have a cross-over pipe between 2 and 3 like that schematic Black Peter posted up.

If you can get a couple better pics.. we can tell you what you have though.

Carbon Fibre cans have a heat advantage. I had a friend who had a carbon fibre pipe and could put his hand on it after an hour of riding.

Yup! I have a carbon Wileyco on mine and it gets pretty warm but you can still touch it after a ride. The chrome tip on the other hand......Ouch!
