  • Got pulled over last night for speeding... (long)

So... on my commute home... moderate twisties for the last 40 or so miles... I'm having fun, not crazy fun, just fun.

So, I get onto a straight away, and I'm right around 70ish on the speedo (65ish actually), and I just put a new throttle rocker on, so I'm sort of playing with the throttle... Just having a good old normal riding experience.

There's a white truck a mile or so ahead, I don't think twice... as he passes me, I notice it says K-9 on the side, everything else is under cover. I have 2 mirrors full of break lights, and he's turning around.

Crappola, I think. I fist/foot the brakes/clutch... I pull right over. I know I'm busted, my dummy fault, I was breaking the law

So... I pull all the way over on the crest of a hill, for best visibility for cars either way. I park at an angle, as to point my headlight at oncoming traffic, and so he can walk up to the side of the bike. I take off my gloves, take off my helmet. Unzip my jacket (business casual has to say something).

The officer comes up.. here is the exchange.

Officer: Do you know how fast you were going?

Me: Yup... about Seventy? (I figure it was at least that, why lie. I think he was surprised by my honest response)

    He nods, knowingly...

    Officer: Licence?

Me: Yes, can I open my tank bag and get my wallet?

    Officer: Sure...

    Me: Here it is.

Officer: Do you have proof of insurance?

Me: Yes, can I reach into my tank bag, again... the big section?

    Officer: Sure, thanks for asking.

So, he grabs all the goodies and goes back to his car. I'm going through the normal thought process.. what's wifey gonna say? Insurance? etc...

    He comes back...

Officer: Do you have your permit?

Me: Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't even think about that... Here it is... (take it from my wallet)

The officer looks at it and hands it back. "You have a nice day, and keep the speed down. About 2 miles ahead, there is a bunch of farm work on the highway on the backside of a hill, be careful of the mud. I'll wait a few minutes so you can get your gear back on."

I was speechless... "er, uhmm, well... Thanks officer!"

Hehe... Yippie.. I drove the speed limit the rest of the way home

I guess honesty and being nice paid off a little bit. I was willing to take the ticket regardless, I knew I was breaking the law, and he was doing his job.

Carry on with your day, thought I would share.

Just another point that MOST cop's will treat you right if you are honest and friendly with them. I had a similar experience although I wasn't speeding.

I was coming home from a breakfast ride. I approached a two way stopsign and did not completley stop for a full three seconds. I started to accelerate through the stop sign when I looked over to my right and saw a cop sitting there in his car facing me. I knew it was to late to try and stop again so I just kept on through the intersection. As I get up the road a little ways I see the cop pulling out of the intersection so I pulled over thinking he saw me "run" the stop sign. I pulled over and shut the bike off waiting for him to get behind me. He pulled beside of me and told me that I did not have my visor down when I came up to the stop sign and that I should be more careful about putting it down. I politley thanked him, started up the bike and continued home. Once I got home I told Sarah who was on the back that I thought for sure that I was gonna get a failure to stop ticket. She told me that he wasn't looking when I stopped but he looked up right as I was pulling away noticing my visor up with no eye protection on so I don't know what would have happened if he saw me not stop.

Wait, you didn't follow the "What to do when stopped by the cops" ACLU guide!

That's not how it is here in LA. When I get pulled over I do everything but cook them breakfast and it hasn't helped one bit. It's about revenue. At least that's been my experience, and I've got the insurance rates to prove it.

Back where I come from (India), I got stopped 3 times in one day. The first time, for turning into a lane at the last moment before a signal (I was in the left lane, and left lane traffic started moving, but I wanted to go straight, so I turned to the right and squeezed my bike next to a car), the second time for going through a light that had just turned red, and the 3rd time for doing a u-turn where I wasnt supposed to (didnt see the no-u-turn sign). In all three cases I plead with the officer, that I was sorry and was having a bad day (I really was). I guess the stars were shining on me or something, I only had to pay a fine to the first officer (a fine of 150 Rupees, which works out to about $3), the other two let me of with a warning. One would think I would have been a little cautious after the first time I was stopped, maybe I thought that my quota for getting stopped was done for the day. Of course I was a little younger then and not very patient.

Wait, they have traffic cops in India? You must be from one of the big cities!
(just teasing you here -- but I've heard a million road-tales from other western travelers that say most of the Indian subcontinent is no traffic enforcement and matched to virtually zero driving skill, esp on the highways between cities).

Yep. 100% true. It's about money. I have a meeting with an attorney to work on fighting my most recent attempt at tax collection next week. I actually got a warning once by a LAPD cop (few months ago) so it IS possible. . .

I hate that "do you know how fast you were going?" quesiton. It's a trap. If you say "yes", he's got you for a confession. If you say "no" he's got you for not being observant to road conditions and regulations - neither helps you. Last time I got over the cop TOLD me why I was getting pulled over, but if he'd asked that question I'd probably either simply nodded (without giving a number) or told him no disrespect but I choose not to answer because it's a loaded question.

Watch the ACLU video -- you'll learn to answer that question (or the more evil "Do you know why I stopped you?") with another question. Great tactic.

Reminds me of the Jeff Foxworthy joke about talking to his wife. he gives the same simple, polite yes/no answers until he finds out exactly what it is he's being accused of!!!

funny and a good life lesson all in one!!

I was in my car coming back from Myrtle Beach on spring break, it was pitch black out and not even my lights caught the cops reflectors (no I didn't hit him). The only way I knew he was there was when my rear view mirror lit up blue and white.

When he asked me if I knew why he was pulling me over I told him o but I figured it was speeding. I had been driving for like 5 hours by then and had seen the last car at some whole in the wall diner/bar that was next to the beauty sallon about to hurs earlier and it was like 3am, needles to say I was cruising along, drinking energy drinks, not paying attention to jow fast I was going. Well according to him I was doing 70 through a 55. I was polite and everything, but being a speeding, 18 year old male on his way back from spring break no amount of politeness helped. I got a $180 ticket.

Yep, they have traffic cops alright, in some places. In other places, things just run normally, as you will see in the link:
