  • Tips on going from Kat to Kat

    Hey everyone,

I bought my first Kat a couple of months ago, an '88 600. It was in rough condition at the time (still is in some places) but it was a good enough bike to get the season started and has yet to falter an inch in it's performance. Mostly, it has some cosmetic damage from a previous owner but otherwise the bike has been an absolute blast to ride and learn on.

Just recently I've been presented with an opportunity to buy yet another Katana, except this time a 2001 750 in, at least what I consider to be, fantastic condition. It has 12,500 KM (sorry not great at conversion, don't what that is miles), has been dealer maintained with records, as clean a title as any could be had (no accidents or claims) and not a single spot of rust, scratch or dent cosmetically.

Here's a link to a picture that the dealer has on it's web page:

I've only spoken with the dealer over the phone and seen the bike from behind a fence but I'll be going to see it in person for a more in depth look tomorrow or the next night. So for this, I have a few questions.

    1) The asking price as it stands now is $4,999.00, (this is CDN of course) which to me is a decent price for a 2001 with low mileage but being inexperienced here I'd like some thoughts on the matter and whether this is a fair price.

    2) Are there some obvious points I should be looking at for this particular year and model, any trouble spots perhaps, known bad points, something that needs to be paid close attention to?

    3) I only started riding last summer on an older Honda 500, then this summer was the Kat 600, which I feel very very comfortable on. I'm certainly not foolish enough to think I've reached the 600's full capability's as it continues to challenge me but am I biting off way more bike with a 750 then I can naturally handle? I do consider myself a mature rider of about average riding knowledge and ability but of course, after only barely 2 season in me, what do I know?

That about covers any questions on my kat to kat switch I hope will take place. I do however want to say thank you to everyone on the forums, this has been a wonderful resource in the little time I've owned my Kat600 and I visit and read the forums daily.

Thanks again for any help in advance.

Don't know too much about what to look out for (if anything) in the '01. But, it sounds like you're getting pinched a bit on the price. Check out:

An '01 750 shows up like this:

Low Retail: $2,900 (US) or $3,250 (CDN)

Average Retail: $3,815 (US) or $4,275 (CDN)

Used vehicle dealers use the NADA book almost universally.

My only other advice is to CALM DOWN!!!

The salesmen at the stealership lives to see that smile on your face and glint in your eye when you first see the "bike of your dreams" - they know they pretty much got ya by the kiwis... It's just a thing... and there's nothing unique about a low mileage, stock 2001 Katana. it's not unique until it's yours.

The one who is willing to walk away from the deal is typically the one who wins the negotiation. BTW - are you planing on trading your '88? If so, don't tell the stealer until AFTER you get your best price on your new purchase.

He says, "Do you have a trade in?"

      You say, "nope"

Then when you get the best price on your new bike, thank him very much and tell him you'll be back after you sell you '88. I swear, he'll try to tackle you as you get up to walk away. Doing it this way, he can't try to hide how bad he's screwing you on your trade...

I'm no expert, just a guy with 3 brothers in the car business.

      Good luck, fadeykin.

PS - Is the dealer willing to warrantee the bike at all?

Never seen a Kat with that colour. My 01 was all black and I think yellow was only avalible in the 600. Looks like its been painted. It may mean nothing but there are a lot of kats for sale in the GTA with a lot more options and cheaper than that.

If you do get this bike what are you planning on doing with your 88? Keeping it or selling it?

That price isn't outrageous, try to bump 500$ off. Online guides are a guide, not always regionally correct. Like houses.

In Alberta Canada: 6600$ for a 2000/750 and 4800$ for a 2000/600. 6600$ is high, but these bikes sell for 5000+.

4500$ for that bike would be fine as long as it's kosher.

Oh, you crazy Canadians!! That's some serious bacon for a bike.

Hey, how about we do ourselves a NAFTA type deal... we can come up there to buy all our prescription drugs and you can come down for your scooters.

Just looked in the ontario autotrader. There are five 00/01 750 at the 5000 price with about the same km as the one your looking for. If your looking for something with lots of extras look at this.

                        Sounds good!
The best deals are from friends of course. Mine was 14000km, new tires, 4000$ (750).

                          Hello again everyone.

Thanks for all the great tips, Jgmann67 I'm sure the tips on dealing with the dealer will come in helpfull, thanks much for that.

Cyberpoet, there is a 6month (everything included) warranty that comes with all their used bikes so although it's not a year, it's better then nothing
                          I suppose.

Macgyver, selling the '88 for sure, not sure if the dealer will take it on trade in, it certainly has lots of work to be done but as Jgmann suggested, I'll hold on that untill we get to dealing.

I'll be taking a one on one look at it tonight hopefully it goes well. Seems the $5,000.00 isn't to off mark but from everyone has said and everything I've read looks like $4,500.00 is certainly a better number for the bike.

That is of course, if everything is in great condition. Thanks again everyone, keep you all updated if you'd like.

A 6-month everything-included warrantee on an used bike is worth $500 IMHO. It's pretty much a guarantee that you're not buying a lemon.

Fadeykin, it sounds like a resonable price if everything is okay and their warranty sounds pretty decent. If they are a reliable dealer with a good track record then just go with your gut. I backed out of a mint 01 750 last year for the same money and regreted it everyday until I bought my 05 600.

Like you, I researched a ton before buying and used many US book values only to learn that values in Canada are far higher because we are pretty muh sheep and will do whatever anyone asks. You probably have a PHD in this field seeing as you are in Ottawa. If you go into any dealer with the US price guide they will treat you like a retard, trust me I tried this and everytime I walk into those location I see them looking for the short yellow bus I just got off.

Remember the bikes power is in your wrist, not in the engine size, so if you are not a dick, and it sounds like you have got it together, you won't have to worry.

The newer Kats are freakin heaven to ride, I just got off a 97 (I loved it)and my 05 makes it seem like a crack whore.

Good luck, have fun and remember its only money.

Nice looking ride, too. Does not look factory so ask why, probably nothing.

Expect an insurance increase. Not to burst your bubble. Those rotten insurance f**ers.
