  • iPod Nano on my bike

I'm looking to build a Cmoy amplifier and ipod "box". Its a little enclosure with the cmoy in it, and the nano would sit on top. I just got the nano and don't know much about iPods as of yet, except the limited experience with my brothers. Now, when the nano is hooked up to the USB cable that comes with it, you can't use the nano. Its locked in a charging/data transfer state. I didn't think that is how it was on the dock though, which I think is just a difference in the resistance value at the indicator pin on the connector on the bottom. The real problem I'm looking at is how to keep a charge on the iPod.

I don't want to buy a car charger, as I wan't to use the line out on the connector as well as put power into the iPod. Basically I think I want to emulate a dock with just power in and line out. What I'm looking for is voltage into the ipod.

If I use USB I have to drop the voltage from the bikes 12 ish down to 5, but firewire seems to be rated at 12. I've seen firewire voltage as high as 30 volts, which leads me to the question, if I use the firewire input pins from the ipod connector, do I need to adjust the voltage at all?

I think i'm looking towards CP a little bit here, I know you are a mac consultor, but not sure if you specialize in iPods as well, but I think your knowledge of firewire would be beneficial.

Basically boils down to how much voltage can/should I put into the bottom of my little nano? Most of the other aspects of this project can be experimented with, but I'd rather not fry my nano with triple its voltage capacity.

just make it removable so you can pull it off to charge. the thing holds a long enough battery life you wont drain it on a single ride(most cases). alot easier than trying a risky wire job with a pricey nano.....

Yeah, but I'm really in the mood to get in over my head with a soldering iron, some protoboard, and a beer or two.......

Ummm... Dude, use a dock-connector cable sans a dock, as well as a proper voltage-regulating charger system (although the input is expected to be 5 volts, the charging system on the Kat runs between 12.7 and 14.7 volts in a healthy charging state -- so a linear charger or direct hook-up is a poor choice). Yes. I was going to use the connector, I found a place online to buy the plug by itself with the pins ready to be soldered to (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/pro...roducts_id=633 and http://home.swipnet.se/ridax/connector.htm), but I was only confused on how much voltage I could run through the firewire, if it needs to be regulated to 12 volts like i thought or if it could handle more. I'm only worried about the heat generated by a regulator knocking it down to 5 volts. Sorry I wasn't more clear earlier.

I had an elaborate setup on my bike all rigged up for the ride down to the gap, but changed it last night. I had my Nomad jukebox (with car adapter) hooked up to a lighter socket off the battery, and helmet speakers in my helmet. I found the helmet speakers were barely audible while wearing earplugs at speed, so I canabalized a set of computer speakers for the amp wired in a plug, and wired up another lighter socket and adapter off my battery. Went for a test ride, and while I COULD hear it fine, and everything worked as expected. It was cumbersome, not weather proof , and took up almost ALL the room under my seat. On top of that it was a macgyvered solution and who knows how long it would work don't want to lose my tunes half way through a 1000 mile journey. Wouldn't be bad if I had a hindle to listen to, but not with the stock sewing machine sound

So Last night I went and bought a set of noise cancelling earbuds. they mould into my ear and act like earplugs, and I can hear them crystal clear at hwy speeds at a low enough volume, to still be able to hear traffic noise. I ditched the amp, and now just have my nomad sitting in my tank bag running off battery power. I also pluged an inline volume control so I can turn it down without having to rip into my tank bag. Works great

I hope it isn't a magnetic tank bag.

I talk about that on my helmet speaker page -- how you need to get high decibel headphones to get good volumes at speed, especially in conjunction with quality earplugs. I use Philips SBC HS500's with an output rating of 106 Db (about $20 at Target) to get around this issue.

Yep, I'm a little worried about it though and might make the switch and move it inside my jacket.

Ya, I'll be delving deeper into the helmet speaker situation when I get back. This was kind of an after thought as I needed something "quick and dirty". these are what I bought. And the work way better than expected. Oh, and yes they were expensive, but I'll be taking them back for store credit when I get home

This is a small package in the end, comes to 4.7" x 2.6" x 1.6". I haven't found a good mounting location yet, and the enclosure will be waterproof, so as long as I seal where the cales run in and out well enough, it should stay waterproof.

I actually read Cyber's post on the higher frequency earphones and found some clip on Sony's at Wal Mart at 106db for $20 on close out and I'm using them in my helmet. Hooked to my Ipod shuffle down in my pocket so I can still skip/volume/pause and all that even with my gloves on. And my g/f has a Nano that I used before I got my shuffle and could do the same thing but was diffucult to adjust the volume due to the way the controls work on them. And battery's only run out on the days that I've used it at work the day before and forgot to charge it.

here's some southerly advice that may come in handy down the road a piece... Next time you are too drunk to drive, walk to the nearest pizza shop and place a delivery order. When they go to deliver it, catch a ride home with them.
