  • Used Katana/Do you know this bike?

So a buddy of mine is looking to buy a bike. I got him on the Katana wagon, and he's found a beautiful 2003 Yellow/Black (same as me!) 600 with 4200 miles on it. The owner is asking 4000, and the bike is in great shape. It has a Yellow windscreen, Yoshi pipe, integrated rear signals, and what looks like a well done home-made undertail. There weren't any obvious scratches, and the current owner is an avid bike enthusiast. He bought the bike for his son (about 28) who came back from iraq last fall, but has gone back over seas, and thus the bike is being sold. He might have put 500 miles on it since last winter, and before that he got it from a dealer. I want to know what I and he should be looking for to know if its actually in good shape. The bike appears to be cosmetically in sound shape, and the batt was dead when we went so it couldn't be ridden. How do I know if its mechanically sound as well?

Also, does anybody from the Cleveland Ohio Area know anything about this bikes history? Its a 2003 Yellow/Black 600 with a chrome yellow windscreen, undertail, integrated tail lights, and a yoshi pipe.

If it sat long enough for the battery to go dead it might need a quick carb clean, you could use a car battery to jump start it to hear it run..

I would assume the gas is bad in there too though.

If the guy is a bike enthusiast, he should be able to take the fairings off, dump the tank, throw in a couple of gallons of good fuel with some treatment in it, change the oil and charge the battery. Even if he just jump starts it and lets it idle for a while.
The battery should still be replaced, but for just tooling up and down his road so you and your buddy can put it through its paces, it'll be good enough.

I think cyberpoet has a 'used bike buying guide' linked on here somewhere. Maybe searching for it will come up with something. I read through it and it had a lot of things I would have never thought to check in 'the heat of the moment'.

My used bike checklist: What to look for when buying an used bike (pre-purchase inspection checklist)

There's a Katana registry on the web somewhere too, by VIN, but I don't recall where it is (my first Kat is listed in there, but my current one isn't).

The big deal here (aside from the mechanicals) are:
          (A) Make sure the title is free and clear, AND
          (B) That either the title is signed and/or the dad has a full power of attorney to sell it for the son. I'd do the title transfer & payment at the actual title/tag office to make sure if there is any glitches, I couldn't get stuck holding the bag (pay on sucessful transfer with no liens).

          Cheers,
