  • Did I purchase the perfect bike?

I thought I would provide an update after 5000 km on my 06 Katana. I have been riding on the road for 23 years. I have owned many many bikes over the years that ranged from dual purpose to pure-sport bikes, cruisers and this (Katana) my first sport touring bike. I have never been bikeless since 16 years of age. At 39 I decided I wanted a bike that would take me a distance in comfort yet still provide enough zip and control for the kid in me when I felt like playing. As I stated the bike is an 06 Katana and still stock except a throttle meister for the longer distance and the ability to relax my throttle hand. I have never received as many compliments on looks from the young to the old on a bike as this Katana. I just completed a little trip last weekend of approx 1200 km with not even the slightest of discomfort. On my journey I was able to play in the twisties and never once did I lose confidence in the handling capabilities of "me" or the "bike". The engine just purrs along at highway speed never missing a beat. The large 20 liter tank helps when touring and you can avoid stopping at every pump or wondering how far to the next gas station with a huge 5 liter reserve. I find the stock seat very comfortable although some people change it out for another. The instruments on the bike are placed perfect. A quick glance tells you speed, rpms, and fuel. The signal light indicators are large and easy to see for those of us that forget to cancel. Under the seat there is a ton of storage. I keep a full tool kit including wrenches, allen keys, adjustable wrench, vise grips, electrical tape, wire, LED flashlight, sockets, a tire plugging kit with a CO2 pump and spare CO2 cartridge, a manuel for basic repairs and part listings, shop rags, a copy of licence, insurance, registration, small can of chain lube (just got a small can today), tire gauge and more stuff that I can't remember. Try to fit all that in a cruiser side cover. When I ride this bike I keep telling myself that I made the perfect choice for me.

I agree. After owning mine for eight years now and over 40,000 km. it still looks good as new and rides the same. I can do all the work myself and parts are very easy to find. Too bad Suzuki has to quit on us.

ummm...if the bike was perfect...why have you spent an additional $15,000.00 on it? (Spedee...you need to upgrade the displacement next)

Is it perfect? Nah... But it's a very noble starting place towards perfection!

If Suzuki had asked $1.5k more for it and put that money into a better suspension set-up and superb tires, added an oil temp gauge, a few frame modifications and integrated baggage options, it could have been. But hey, then I wouldn't have had half the opportunities to actually figure out what worked

              Cheers,

But $15,000 plus intial investment of $7300 is still cheaper then say a VFR plus $15,000. Anyways I saved on not buying a Oil Temp Gauge.

                    They are an awesome bike.
Like Cyber said, better suspension, maybe Aluminum frame, better tires, a wee bit more power (possibly fuel injection?) a couple of styling changes,(Headlights) and it would be perfect.

I certainly miss mine. Unfortunately I can't afford to have them all.
