  • Time well spent in a cast

I have been busy working on the Kat while I am unable to ride. Some of you have caught my posts, and a couple of these I haven't mentioned to anyone. So, here is how I have stayed busy sitting at home.

    1) Swapped out gauges to the 750 gauges. Wiring had to be swapped around, as the plugs were not the same. I had to make a couple of "jumper" wires to change end terminal types, but in the end everything works and none of the wiring harnesses were butchered. Now, I can change back to the 600 gauges if I ever need to.

P.S. JAX is a GREAT guy to deal with!! The gauges would not have happened without him.

    2) After 2 years of having this bike, I finally made the needed changes to make my solo cowl fit smooth with the taillight. It always stuck up higher because of the fenders. Thanks to a Black & Decker "Lil Mouse" I was able to shave it down so it fits like it should.

    3) The dark red top of the taillight has always bothered me on the 600's, so I decided to see what it would look like painted white. The shade is a little off, but I think it is close enough most people won't notice.

    4) Performed a tune up on the girl and readjusted the air/fuel mixture for this Alaska altitude. Of course followed by a re-synching of the carbs. I don't think I have heard her run this smooth since I brought her home.

All things considered, I think I have made a pretty good use of my time while recovering from hernia surgery, and having my hand in a cast. Let me know what you think.

Naw... not trying to fake a 750. I got the upper triple when I was swapping out ignition, gas, seat lock so one key would work everything. It came from a 750, and I didn't feel like tapping and drilling those "security" bolts holding it in. I have found they ARE more comfortable though. Plus, it dropped the front end to match the rear.

The gauges are easier to see, and I just like the looks of them better.

Sooo........ what ya think 'bout the taillight?

Looks good. Like the 750 gauges on there better than the 600's. The taillight looks good.

What type of mod's did you have to do to the solo cowl to make it fit on a pre 98 600. I would sometime like to get one for mine but noone makes them for an 88 kat 600.

                        Thanks for the replies guys.

MD86 ... The back of the taillight is not painted. Cagers can still see the light as well as ever. I just painted the top of it where no light came through.

Macgyver ... My cowl is a "Suzuki" cowl that was made for the pre-98 600's. I got mine from Special K when I bought the bike from him. You might check with him or Braada Jim to see if they still have one. They had just bought up all of them from Sweden or somewhere when I got mine.

Modifications to the cowl? Well, I just had to shave off about 1/16" from where the side bolts are up and around the taillight. Then I had to elongate the holes on the brackets where it connects to the frame so it could drop down some more. IF you can get one, you might not have to do any of that, as each bike and cowl would match up differently.

I didn't know there was a difference in the gauges...

                              What about the red line?
