  • Carb Sync Kit

Has anyone on this forum tried one of these homemade carb sync tools:

If so...how did it work for you? And are there any plans out there to convert this to a 4 carb sync tool?

Also...there appears to be some debate on using water vs. two stroke oil. Any suggestions?

OK first off I suggest you read this:

Not to pimp my own posts but it will help explain a lot.
Water is no good unless you can work on the bike up on a third floor..

Make two of these and you can tune two carbs..
    Or
Since you tune two at a time on the Kat you can get away with just two tubes...
I think Sweet Lou and Cory tried this..
    Not sure how it worked..

Great write up (i kinda skimmed through it for now as I am at work)...but i already made mine and it worked great.

The bottom line is that water will sit at the bottom of the U shape tube (in equal heights) as long as the pressure remains the same at the two open ends (1 ATM pressure). Because we can messure the volume of water we could calculate the actual reduced pressure value once we connect it to the carb, however, One is not interested in the amount of pressure...One is just interested in defference in the amount of pressure between each carb. One advantage of water is that it is lighter than mercury and therfore reacts to the pressure changes easier and therefore one should be able to get a slightly more accurate reading. Mercury's advantage is that one needs less tubing.

One thing I did was take even amounts of cotton and placed some in each end of the tube. by doing this, the cotton acts a dampener (reducing jumping and reducing the risk of water entering the carbs). This makes using water much more viable.

I'm not sure if this is a result of the Jet Kit or a result of syncing the carbs (mine were way off) but I noticed that my gas mileage went from about 45 mpg to about 55 mpg.

I plan on really going through your article in more detail after work. As I find it fairly interesting.

BTW BP...you are here in central texas. Do have a JetKit and Advancer? If so...do you have issues with the Kat overheating?

          TX,
I do not run an advancer..
I'd like to ut I do worry about the heat.

I see the idea about the tool now.
You are right that as a differential gauge it
          should be fine..

          Nice gas milage...
          Wow..

I was on the verge of making one. I bought all the parts, the only thing left was the meter ruler. I did some more reading, and I decided to just buy one instead, because I kept on reading that it was for 2 stroke engines. The theory sounds good, but the sensitivity sounds like it might be too much, and it might suck in the fluid into the engine too quickly. I bought mine for $65 shipped
