  • And today's Stupid Award goes to...

It was a sunny day today, even though it was 90 by 11AM, so I took the bike for a ride after leaving work early. Decided to pick up the fiance and take her to lunch. Lately, I've been feeling more and more paranoid when riding. Guess listening to Wildkat's "just think that everyone is out to hit you" speeches are getting to me. Sure enough, today someone tried. Getting ready to go through an interesection at 55mph and some ditzy college chick decides to turn right in front of me. I lay on the horn while grabbing some front brake and she seems to see me now and moves into the shoulder. Without that, I was toast. There was a semi in the turn lane coming the other way and I had no where to do. But I made it. Stupid....person wouldn't even make eye contact as I went by.

Later, on the way home, getting ready to hit another intersection, this time at about 20mph. All of a sudden, from the left, a red cars pulls out and cuts me off. I saw her moving, also saw a right, not left turn signal, so I figured I was ok. Glad I was watching cause I was able to brake fast enough to avoid knowing her car intimately. What gets me the most, is that her plates say "SEE US 5"! What?!?!?! Get a clue, chica! You're apparently blind!

So today's Stupid Award goes to "SEE US 5".

On a lighter note, my fiance thought it was hilarious when I pointed out the "RUTT RO 1" license plate as we were leaving the Bread Company.

DOD scientists have been working on invisibility for camoflague for decades. Silly scientists -- all they have to do is put the soldier on a street bike and 'poof', the soldier is immediately invisible...

Doubt it? Then check the military regs which require any soldier riding in uniform on a street bike wear an orange safety vest over their military clothing... for visibility.

That aint no lie... I had to wear that dang orange thing at Edwards AFB back around 1988... It still didn't seem to work... They still could not see me... I guess it was the darkness of my pure WHITE Honda Intercepter at night... Heck the blind could see me... But could a driver, Hell no... I guess I was an early stealth project... [/b]

Someone should market a helmet with a built-in strobe light.

I'm waiting for the day they mandate all motorcycle riders have to wear an orange vest...for our safety of course. It's a lot easier than putting the onus on car/truck drivers to keep an eye out for us.

I don't remember where I saw it, but there is a wind powered LED light in red that flashes as you ride. It sticks to the top of your helmet. Looks kind of out of place, but anything that helps.

They've update the reg to be "contrasting jacket or shirt durin the day and reflective jacket or shirt at night." The contrast must be something light and something dark on the same peice of clothing. It all must be visible, as in no wearing a backpack unless it to is conrasting or reflective. (I ride on an Air Force Base daily.)

Military members already have to wear something all the time, on duty or off, on base or off. They must also wear pants, long-sleeves, boots, helmet with face covering or forehead high windsheild. Fun, huh?

There are stick-on battery powered LED strobes available on the market for helmets, and there are even ones that tie into your brake light via a radio signal (transmitter goes inline with the brake light wire or bulb). I was just looking at some in a catalog the other day.

Well I felt like a retard when I changed out my Rear light and basically forgot to put the cable back on that releases the seat and needless to say when I went to do the fender chop a day or 2 later and felt retarded when the key just turned without the seat popping up.

I'm in the military, I have to wear the reflective vest. I dont have a big issue with it. I ended up getting a milspec vest by ICON. It's bright neon yellow, I liked it better than the orange. By not wearing the proper safety gear you can get into trouble if you get into an accident. If the power's that be find out you didnt wear the proper gear (you have to wear it all the time, not just on base) and not wearing it contributed to the accident..then they may not pay your medical bills. We had a case like this a couple years back, not sure if they guy got his bills paid but initially they were not going to cover his expenses.

If you're going to wear a flashing light on your head, make sure it matches the color of your moped.

really, they just need to educate the non-motorcycle riding population to look out for us... not once in drivers ed, did they mention anything about motorcycles. such a large portion of the in class session for basic rider course talks about cars, and how to look out for them... maybe they need to learn to look out for us too.
