  • 600 vs. 750

I was looking for a Kat600 for my first bike but I just found a 1998 Kat 750 for $2500. Is the Kat750 a good starter or do you guys think that it's a bit much? I don't know the actual mileage but the seller lists it as low miles.....

I started on the Katana 750 and didn't look back. It was my absolutely first motorcycle. However, if you have any doubts, purchase a smaller bike. Use the search feature to find similar discussions You'll find lots of information on the virtues of starting with a used, high reving and less poweful motorcycle.

I started on a katana 750, no biggy. And if your only paying 2,500 for a bike, you really dont have to worry about dropping it like you would a brand new one.

buy the 750, eventually you will grow out of the 600 in a short period of time and you'll regret not getting the bigger bike. it's not a monster like a hayabusa.

I started on a 1977 565lbs. KZ 750b. I rode dirt bikes pretty much all my life but on the road holyshit. compared to that bike the Kat is a Caddy.Be careful youll do fine..Still have the KZ and love it.

Well , I started on a Shadow 500 , then went to a Virago 750 , THEN got a Kat 750 (okay , 771 with problems ) , and I STILL thought the Kat was a monster . I thought it was a feather-weight , with TONS of power compared to the other 2 bikes I had . Depends on the learner .

The difference between the Kat 750 and Kat 600 are virtually academic. 10lb wet weight difference. 10% power difference. The 600 has more direct steering; the 750 has fewer vibes at the bars. If the price is right, take either.

The 750 should be okay. It does'nt have threatening power and may come in handy if you eventually carry a passenger. Good Luck!

I started off with a used 750 as well. It was the first bike i ever owned or road on the street. Just take your time and be safe and you'll be much happier with the 750. I ended up selling mine within 6 months of the purchase and bought a brand new one of the floor. I didn't lose hardly any money when I sold it and it gave me the piece of mind of not having to worry about dropping, scratching, breaking a brand new bike. 750 definately especially for $2500.

People have toured on bikes with HALF the power of a Katana . I don't buy that excuse .

People have toured the planet with bikes with as little as 10% of the power output of a modern Kat... Everyone seems to conveniently forget that 3 to 12 HP bikes were the norm well into the middle of the 20th century aside from racing esoterics.
Something like an early (say 1924) Matchless Superior could take you about the globe, using 349 cc single cylinder side-valve engine putting out 2-3/4 HP (74 mm bore x 81 mm stroke). Step forward 50 years, and a '74 BMW R60/6 had a bore of 599cc, cranked out 40 HP and would do 97 mph -- around the globe several times. HP is pretty much irrelevant anyway; it's the torque that makes the bike for real-world use.

Since the Kat 600 and 750 are so close to each other in virtually every area. It comes down to your confidence in your skills in riding. If you can get the 750 for a good price, and everything checks out as far as it being a taken care of, reliable, and safe to ride. Then go for it.

i bought my 04' 600 cause i liked the yellow and not the all grey of the 750.

You can grow out of any bike really. i did, somewhat. What i did to change it was go -1 on front sprocket and +6 in rear.....what a change. who needs 145mph, now im quicker and get about 125mph top. I would like more TOP end power, but when i see how guys on superbikes have to throttle back when they take off to keep nose on the ground, then looks at how hard i can take off and never worry about wheel coming up,i like mine better.

I'd say go for the 750 easy. but always remember...BE CAREFULL and ease into the higher RPM's slow at first.
