  • Got Welts From my Brakes!

So I was rebuilding my rear caliper yesterday night....

I had the caliper aparts, seals out, and started spraying everything down with brake cleaner. It was pretty dirty in there, with what looked like either just plain dirt, collected brake dust, or something else...

Well, while spraying it, I got some splater on my arm and leg (was wearing shorts), and WELTS started appearing! What gives.....I thought I was getting an allergic reaction of somesort...and they got big! They were itchy, and not just round welts, kinda spider like...

    hmmmm

It could have been a reaction to the brake dust, the brake cleaner. Both of those items are toxic and can cause skin burns among other things. I say put some anti-biotic ointment on it. If it still looks bad tomorrow I would see a doctor.

Brake cleaner + human skin = really dry irrated skin. brake cleaner dries up and evaporates pretty quickly so when in contact with human skin it dries it up and sometimes gives this effect. i know when i worked at a auto repair shop that when i would have poisen ivy or bug bikes i would scratch them open and spray brake cleaner into the cut....its not safe nor do i reccomend doing it but it stops the itch sideeffects may include rash

you must be allergic. I was doing the same thing yesterday with the front calipers on the gs550, and my hands were covered with the stuff. I even took a shot of the stuff in the face when I was blowing the parts off with the air-hose (emmediately backed down the regulator from 150psi to 80). got one drop in my eye which burned like hell....but other than that, no problems. I even washed the paint off my hands with the brake cleaner to remove the paint (works great). so ya....you must be allergic.
I don't have a short temper. I just have a quick reaction to bullshit.

next time try wd-40 without scratching yourself raw. aside from freeing rusted nuts and bolts, it is also good to relieve itch from bug bites, works as a repellent.....and if you spay some on a lure, it makes a great fish attractant. no joke. totally multi-purpose.

Different brake cleaners have different ingredients, so it may be common to that brand and you may be unaffected by other brands... or more likely, it was brake fluid that the brake cleaner carried onto you. What brand was it?

The most common compounds are tetracholorethelene (most spray brake cleaners, such as Gunk brand), or in the non-chlorinated brake cleaners, spotting naptha mixed with a small amount of rubbing alcohol.

In the case of tetrachloroethelene, it absorbs through the skin and can cause instant defatting of cells (literally melting the fat out of the cell and sending it through the cell membrane). Typical treatment instructions are to wash thoroughly with soap and water ASAP, and seek medical attention if the problem persists over a few hours, as well as to wash clothing exposed to it before wearing again.

                Cheers,

                          Is there a tetrachloroethelene diet?

I'm sure it's terrible for you as indicated by the "seek medical attention" disclaimer but I bet a tetrachloroethelene bath would drop you a few lbs. Hehe.
